Another DCC Winner!
1 personnes sur 1 ont jugé cet avis utile. Don and Phil Everly were Rock and Roll pioneers. Focussing on tight harmonies and country based melodies, they influenced such artists as the Byrds, Beach Boys, Searchers and the Eagles.
DCC Compact Classics and Steve Hoffman have done a wonderful job in selecting most of their biggest hits to 1961 and using their vacuum tube technology to bring them to life. Most of us think of the music from the 50s and early 60s as the tinny, scratchy 45s or transistor radio sound we grew up with. This CD shows that recording studio technology was quite good, but it was the transfer to vinyl where most sound was lost. On this CD, there is lots of depth and space between the instruments and Don and Phil's voices are angelic.
A must for any music historian or even if you just like to sing along ("Wake up little Suzie....").

Scarecrow: 60s rock given 80s treatment
Scarecrow was the third of four very successful LPs for Mellencamp in the 80s. His guitar oriented rock was a throwback to the electro synth bands of the time. Prior to recording this album, he had his band learn a bunch of 60s classics from artists like the Rascals, soul songs, etc. so that he could parlay the 60s feeling into Scarecrow. ROCK in the USA sounds so 60ish that you can hear elements of Wild Thing, Along Comes Mary and others in it. I guess because it has standard instrumentation such as guitar, bass, drums, the MFSL treatment, although good, doesn't really make you stand up and take notice. There was no re-discovery or hearing of instruments for the first time. That being said, it is a good album with good sound.

Genius + Soul + ABC Paramount = Atlantic songs missing

By mixing elements of gospel with rhythm and blues and soul, particularly in the 1950s, his music expanded the musical landscape and was a driving force for Atlantic records. It is the omission of this musical period which knocks this 2 CD set down a notch. Containing all ABC Paramount songs (except What'd I Say), it provides a comprehensive repertoire of his 1960 - 1972 period (where he focussed on Country and Western styles), but totally misses the Atlantic period (1950s) which showed his greatness.
Steve Hoffman's mixes (DCC fame) are fine and the detail is quite good on these DCC sponsored silver discs.
A good set to cover the ABC stuff, but now I need to find a comprehensive Atlantic set to complete his catalogue.
