Too Long In Exile - Morrison, Van
For me, this one was a long time coming from Van Morrison, as I would rank it up there with his best recordings in the past 20 years. There was a good mix that should keep everyone happy. The opening track "Too Long In Exile" sets the tone for the cd and is Van Morrison at his best. Candy Dulfur's sax adds just the right touch as she does to his "Ball And Chain." Being a blues fan, I was happy to see that genre covered by Van Morrision. His "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" had a nice groove laid down by Nicky Scott. I was surprised to hear Georgia Fame on the organ. But my absolute favorite on the cd was Van Morrison's teaming up with John Lee Hooker for a dynamite version of "Gloria." It was just so natural hearing too legends trade licks and vocals and to me it was the best version of his old Them standard. In closing, if you are a Van Morrison fan, by all means grab it. While it may not be his best, it ranks right up there with some of the better ones. In my mind, Van Morrison belongs right up there with Dylan and in some cases surpasses him.

The Rippingtons -- Brave New World
When it comes to smooth jazz, Russ Freeman has got to be at the forefront on just about anything he creates. Although many great musiscians have come and gone, Freeman is the one contstant and he always gives you the best on each outing. On this title, "Brave New World," his co-horts are Tony Morales, Kim Stone, Steve Reid, David Kochanski and Jeff Kashiwa and they are at their peak. There is plenty of like on this cd, but one of the standouts for me was "Key To The Forbidden City," as it captures everything from smooth jazz, to eastern mysticism to uptempto vibes. The real jazz rocker is "Cicada" while "Virtual Reality ' comes close. Freeman even takes on the Beatles" "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and it does George Harrison proud. This is a great cd and covers all bases as most Rippington's cd's do. Check it out.
