Not Ashamed to Listen
1 personnes sur 1 ont jugé cet avis utile. I bought Not Ashamed for my kids actually, but I previewed some of their songs before doing so. I am not really a fan of CCM, I find most of it derivative and uninspiring. With the exception of some of the 70s, early 80s artists (Randy Stonehill, Larry Norman, Keith Green, DeGarmo & Key, e.g.), Christian artists are quite homogenous, as if style was an affront to the Almighty. I understand this thinking, however, I think it is somewhat misled.
The Newsboys impressed me, though, with a unique style that tends toward formulaic at times, but still fulfills its purpose to proclaim the Message in a trendy, up-pop, almost dance-groove way. It is a true alternative to the whispery-soft singers of Christian radio.
Listening to Not Ashamed, I can get whiffs of the 80s British synth invasion ala New Order, maybe even a little Cure. But their sound isn't dated, just influenced. Lyrically speaking, I think they are good - not excellent; these aren't lyrics that will grab you and poetically explode in your mind. They aren't horrible or milquetoast either, at least when I can hear them. Enunciation or clarity seem to be lacking at times.
I recommend this CD to anyone who wonders where the good contemporary Christian music has gone.

Still Good After All These Years

That would have put me around 11-14 years old at the time, and I absolutely loved it then. I have watched the movie several many times since, and I still love it. It was made in a genre that was common for the time - a war film with a cast of marquee names. Or, if they weren't exactly marquee at the time, they would eventually come to be. It seems to be a formula that worked well in its time, though its debatable as to whether it would do so now. The movie seems to be classified as a comedy. While there are humorous characters and some humorous interplay between characters, I would not place it in that category. This is not a movie that will make you laugh much. Instead, if you like action, especially based around World War II, and if you like Clint Eastwood's unflappable demeanor, you will like this as well. Couple it with music from the Mike Curb Congregation and some subtle references made during the film, and I think it's a hit that plays well and wears well too. www.thejeffhowe.com

A Decent, Affordable Metal Guitar
The particular guitar I bid on and won did not have the S3 headstock as pictured here. Instead it has the v-headstock which you will find on any Dean or Washburn Dimebag-labeled guitar. The Evo Noir doesn't have dot inlays on the fretboard which can be offputting to those of us used to using them for guidance in finger placement. And this is a fairly heavy guitar due to its mahogany construction. It has a good sound and is very well suited for my son who likes to play heavy metal. However, for my style, another guitar will probably work better.
