Black and Decker LST540 Trimmer
4 personnes sur 4 ont jugé cet avis utile. After only two months, grass wound up around the bearing of the trimmer spool and jammed and damaged the ball bearing mount. We took this in to an Authorized Black and Decker service place in Anacortes WA. They rapidly and curtly told us that it was not repairable and not covered by warranty, that they had seen such problems before. We were apparently under the mistaken illusion that this unit was designed to cut grass. I repaired the plastic bearing-mount in my own shop with machined brass. This worked very well for several weeks. - so much for being unrepairable. After these several weeks (~ 8) passed, the unit suddenly stopped working. There was no shaft rotation whatsoever. I didn't waste time with the Black and Decker warranty. Upon dis-assembling the brushless motor I found that one of the 4 rotor magnet poles had actually cracked on one corner, with pieces jammed between the rotor and field windings. I removed the loose pieces, and did a little epoxy patching and grinding on the rotor and re-assembled the unit and it would run. This demonstrated that the electronic motor control module was surprisingly robust. Something foreign must have gotten past the narrow cooling slits in the motor to cause the rotor to crack. - poor design. Also poor design for allowing grass to get wound up into the (lower) spool bearing, also poor product support. It was lightweight and economical -but for less than half a year's total use on a residential plot? Save your money. Black and decker has a long way to go to clean up their act(s) - mechanical, and business.

A practical Ubolt cable clip.
These Ubolt clips are smaller than most models for a 3/16 wire rope. Tightening the nuts to the common recommended torque for this size (7.5 ft-lbs) consistently sheared the u bolt off at the nut. Reducing the torque to 5 ft-lbs consistently works. Its important to have a good torque wrench. I had problems with a Dura-Last wrench. Testing shows cable ends formed with 3 of these + appropriate stainless thimble will hold over 1300 lbs tension, again 3/16 cable. Ultimate breaking or slipping strength was not determined. 1300 lbs was sufficient for my application and just within my test capability so I let the setup go at this arrangement. This model clip has nut sizing and separation to allow for US sized wrench extended depth socket to fully capture and tighten the nuts. This is not a trivial statement. There are other models that do not allow for easy nut tightening giving a great deal of hassle. I would attach a photo but something goes wrong with the photo attachment on ebay.

Best Bear vault on the market
Of the 4 brands of bear vaults we have used so far this model exceeds all others in several aspects. The ratio of capacity (space inside) to weight is easily 30% more than the best competitor. We have not tested the different bear vaults by having them mauled by (consistently repetitious) bears. The opening is nearly full width so getting stuff into and out is easier by far than the smaller port-door type of bear vault. We have modified ours by painting the pressure places along the rim of the top to show clearly where to press to unlock the screw top. Also we painted where the locking post is on the collar of the transparent body. Although some of these are a bit difficult to unscrew, I would choose this over the need to have a flat implement (coin or key) to unscrew the fasteners on a bear vault of another type. The body being transparent does help in logistics of "What do I have packed here?" without opening and removing contents like the other brands. The bumps and ribs on the outer surface make tying this bear vault to a pack a lot more secure than other brands- typically bulgy-sided smooth barrels.. Also, the body not being black color, like some other brands, tends to keep the temperature of the contents lower on a day in the sun, so if you have chocolate in the vault there will be less of a tendency for it to become soup.
They could improve on consistent ease of unscrewing the lid, and marking the pressure places to unlock the screw threads (As we had to do after-purchase). There may be lighter, stronger plastics possible (Kevlar, carbon fiber, - better in tension), but until some other manufacturer makes a major breakthrough, this is a compelling value.
