Segascope Edition Sega Master System
This system is entirely too cool. It's unfortunate Sega was not able to continue their war with Nintendo, as they really had some great ideas. First, the console seems to be better made than the then competing NES. The buttons have a nice positive click, and the the physical design of the console looks modern even by today's standards. Additionally, rather than use a spring-loaded trigger on the "zapper", it has what feels to be a button underneath the trigger. This allows for less strain on the user's hand while playing for an extended period of time, and gives better tactile feedback. The system I bought comes with the 3-D glasses, and I'm surprised to say they actually work pretty well! These plug into the second port on the front of the system, which was deleted from later versions of the Master System. They aren't the best 3-D simulation I've experienced, but they definitely had me recoiling from virtual objects a time or two. These are active 3-D, as opposed to the cheap blue/red glasses you'll see every so often. These glasses are reasonably hard to get, so expect to pay a premium for them. The system has better graphical horsepower than the NES does, but unfortunately never had the games library Nintendo could boast. Even so, there are some wonderful games still readily available for low prices. This system has a major role in gaming history. Every gaming collection needs a NES, and I would argue every collection needs a Sega Master System as well. For a budget-minded collector, or just someone looking to have fun, these consoles are a great bargain.
