Cheap mSATA SSDs are a great way to upgrade older computers or laptops. In my particular case, I use a lot of mSATA SSDs with 44pin IDE adapters to upgrade older laptops; having an SSD is just one of the easiest upgrades to make an old laptop feel snappier. Even laptops newer than that that are still old either have an mSATA slot or you can buy an mSATA to SATA adapter, and given how dirt cheap mSATA SSDs are, it's a great choice. For $12 you can get a 64GB SSD to run Linux on, and I think that's a very good price. They're compact, cheap, and versatile with adapters, so I do recommend.
New USB Sensor Adapter AC Power Supply for Microsoft XBOX360 Xbox 360 kinect

Does the Job Well
This is for Kinects that don't have the regular USB connection, and it does the job well of powering it and adapting it to be used for PC development purposes. I haven't tried this in conjunction with any of my automation projects, but for allowing the Kinect to work as a 3D scanner, or just using it regularly on the Xbox 360, it works fantastically so far.
DDR3 is fairly cheap now if you're going with a slightly older platform for budgetary reasons or if you just have an older DDR3-based system, so it is well worth the upgrade to keep it relevant. An additional 8GB of RAM helps out if you're doing a lot of memory-intensive work like I do, and if you're upgrading, why not go with 1866MHz or the fastest DDR3 that your board supports? This Kingston RAM worked just fine for my purposes.
