Good intro to stereograms...
As a kid I loved the viewmaster, but a chance finding of a box of stereograms in a bookstore six months ago, and then finding a viewer in an antique shop a month later got me hooked on stereoviews. Now if only I could find out if I paid too much, where can I get more, and how much is out there! This book accomplishes all of these things admirably. It isn't a history book, but it gives a good amount of the history and background of stereoviews...enough to give a great context without being tedious. It isn't a comprehensive listing of all viewers and prices for them...but it describes the various devices used and still available, along with the rough pricing of them. It isn't a catalog of all the 10s of thousands of stereoviews produced, but it explains what factors go into evaluating the quality of a view, what major manufacturers existed, what categories of cards exist, and then it lists the prices of a pretty good representative sample of those cards. If you are a stamp collector, then I can say this book isn't the scott catalog or the "fundimentals of philately"...but it is a decent abridgment of the two put together in a small volume. Overall, I don't think i could have found a better book for someone "newly bitten" by this fascinating area. Scott PS And if you're wondering, I paid fair market value for the viewer, and I got away with murder with the price I paid for that box of stereoviews! That's always nice to learn :-)
