Product Information

This landmark film from silent director D.W. Griffith was the first movie blockbuster. However, it also reveals a horribly racist version of American history. The first part of the film chronicles the Civil War as experienced through the eyes of two families; the Stonemans from the North, and the Camerons of the South. Lifelong friends, they become divided by the Mason-Dixon line, with tragic results. Large-scale battle sequences and meticulous historical details culminate with a staged re-creation of Lincoln's assassination. The second half of the film chronicles the Reconstruction, as Congressman Austin Stoneman (Ralph Lewis) puts evil Silas Lynch (George Siegmann) in charge of the liberated slaves at the Cameron hometown of Piedmont. Armed with the right to vote, the freed slaves cause all sorts of trouble until Ben Cameron (Henry B. Walthall) founds the Ku Klux Klan and restores order and "decency" to the troubled land. While THE BIRTH OF A NATION was a major step forward in the history of filmmaking, it must be noted that the film supports a racist worldview. But there is no denying that it remains a groundbreaking achievement, setting a high watermark for film as an art form.

    Historical movie with propaganda

    I learned about this movie from a historical perspective in junior high 60 years ago. I never watched it until now. The first 2 hours is aimed at a historical approach to the Civil War and reconstruction. The last hour is the propaganda about how The KKK rescued the country. It is of historical importance.

    Birth of a Nation is a perfect title for the movie. However, the title was originally going to be called, "The Klansman."

    Birth of a Nation is one of the greatest movies ever made. It depicts the truth about what happened in the South during the Reconstruction Era. The movie also portrays the KKK as a heroic organization that saved the South from the onslaught from the Northern Oppressors. The movie is historically correct. The movie only scratches the surface on the horror that the Southern people were put through by the Northern Republicans at that time.

    Shame on D.W. Griffith . . .

    I was dismayed to discover that it is a prejudicial classic. I do not want it in my space, even though it is a part of history . . . a shameful part.

    Birth of a Nation: We've come a long way as a people

    D.W. Griffith was a director that people either loved or hated, and this film is why. His use of panoramic long-shots in portraying Civil War battles was considered a ground-breaking technique for the silent film era. So influential that these techniques are still in use today. This, combined with his portrayal of complex human relationships is why he is considered one of the most loved loved directors in film history. The flimsy modern concept of political correctness is put into shocking perspective through his portrayal of freed African-American slaves as natural born villains and the Ku-Klux-Klan as avenging heroes.
