Pricey, but works
Honestly. I purchased this product to support the open source community. It is grossly overpriced for the service it performs. I find it is a bit slower when compared to the $2-3 usb wifi However, it does indeed work. That said, I have relied on open source Linux for sometime now and view this purchase as chipping in to the open source kitty.

Great product. Works as advertised.
Plugged this adapter into a USB 2.0 on a HP 8000 Elite Desktop with Intel Core 2 Duo CPL E8400 @ 3.00GHz x 2 running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS and it found my wireless network immediately. Entered my password and I was connected. Easy!

Works flawless with Mint 18+
Linux has very poor support for the Ralink type wifi installed on my HP laptop. I've struggled with it for years. Recently, an "upgrade" killed my wifi; I spent hours searching for and testing fixes. This Atheros chip thing fixed it with absolutely no pain. Just plug it in. Yes, it is a little pricey and the shipping charge is excessive but it was the most cost effective solution to my problem.Linux has very poor support for the Ralink type wifi installed on my HP laptop. I've struggled with it for years. Recently, an "upgrade" killed my wifi; I spent hours searching for and testing fixes. This Atheros chip thing fixed it with absolutely no pain. Just plug it in. Performance improvement after not so easy install
When I got it working, the Penguin usb adapter improved reception significantly over the on-board wifi card in my Lenovo laptop with a Ubuntu Linux OS. Getting it working properly took a while because the website instructions, while seemingly clear enough, didn't work for me. I was able to find info on the web that enabled me to shut down the on-board card that was interfering with the network selection of the Penguin adapter. While the cost of the adapter is a bit more expensive than some others, guaranteed operation with a Linux OS and the performance improvement made it worth it to me.When I got it working, the Penguin usb adapter improved reception significantly over the on-board wifi card in my Lenovo laptop with a Ubuntu Linux OS. Why a few critical reviews are just wrong
The complaint: Device does work with USB 1.1 or 2.0. Most likely the user is describing a problem with a defective USB controller or built-in USB hub. This sort of problem is not specific to a USB device, but rather can be reproduced with different devices on the market. Even if some USB devices work that does not mean the issue is with the USB devices. Some USB controllers flake out when larger USB packets are sent. So keyboards, mice, etc work, but not USB hard drives, wifi adapters, etc. The complaint: Poor signal. The adapter is not designed for long range use. However the more likely problem is not range as it is an issue with the USB controller on the machine the adapter is being used on. The problem is probably the same issue described above. ThinkPenguin released a firmware that reduces the size of the USB packet used by the adapter and this will make the adapter work on systems with defective USB controllers in some instances. The complaint: There's no shortage of superior adapters out there for a fraction of the price. False. ThinkPenguin is the only company manufacturing adapters today with the AR9271 chipset. The AR9271 chip is the only modern USB wifi chipset with a complete set of source code for both the driver and firmware and as such only adapters with this chipset can be properly supported on ANY operating system. The company is also the only reason that there were ever USB wifi adapters on the market which could be properly supported in recent time. The company spent years working with Atheros (the company that designed the chipset) on a complete source code release. This enables the GNU/Linux community to properly and indefinitely support the wifi adapter. This included an eventual port and support for other operating systems like FreeBSD and OpenBSD. The complaint: Needs OS config changes for some Debian os's. This is true of one obscure distribution that nobody uses that has a bug in it (ie the developers went and did rm -rf * in the firmware directory) and of pure Debian. This is not really a fault of the adapter or Debian, but rather is the result of a set of choices made. Debian does not include wifi firmwares in the installation medium. If you don't like this Debian is probably not the distribution for you. Debian does have firmware in its software repository and Debian and the other buggy distribution do have the driver as its built into the mainline kernel AND linux-libre kernel for those distributions that do not utilize the mainline kernel.
