Product Information

A favorite from the American Girl historical doll collection, Kit Kittredge makes her big-screen debut with this feature. Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) brings the doll to life and lights up the story's Depression-era setting with her precocious charm. Kit is aware that the Great Depression is under way, but she feels lucky it hasn't directly touched her. While other people in the country struggle to find work and food, the 10-year-old plays comfortably in her tree house and writes articles she hopes will be published by the Cincinnati Register. But everything changes when Kit's dad (Chris O'Donnell) loses his job, forcing Kit and her mother (Julia Ormond) to turn their home into a boarding house while he goes to Chicago in search of work. As a colorful assortment of characters fill Kit's home, Kit learns how to be resourceful. When she gets to know a pair of child hobos, she realizes how kind and friendly homeless people can be. With her journalistic mind in overdrive, she sets out to clear their name in print, dispelling rumor with hard fact and a child's fresh perspective. But when her house is burglarized and all fingers point to her trusted new friends, Kit doesn't know where to turn. Will her investigative skills be able to save her family from the poorhouse? Only time will tell. KIT KITTREDGE offers something for young viewers and adults alike, and boasts an all-star cast (including Stanley Tucci, Jane Krakowski, and Joan Cusack) in addition to its likable young star. Little girls and American Girl fans should delight in the film's faithful recreation of the character's beloved period costumes. Very Insigthful for a Kid's Movies
This is a series of movies based on "America Dolls". The others have been duds, what sets this movie above the sentimental platitudes, is the attention to detail of the era. Sure, this movie is really YA oriented, but an adult viewing this flick, will find a wealth of information on "The Great Depression". And with today's economic meltdown and our near depression status, it is understandable how we got through the first one and might fail during the current. Times were different. Government was not involved and it took a world war to get us out of it. This won't happen today. But it is delightful watch these (at times) overly enthusiastic characters. If you look past the dribble, you will see the harsh reality of a very bleak time in our history. Breslin, always cute, executes too much ... This is a series of movies based on "America Dolls". Other cast members, particularly a very funny featured role by Joan Cusack more than makes up for the somewhat schmaltzy performances. I gave this five stars because the movie deals with some very ignored topics of the time: "Hoovervilles", evictions, taking in boarders to make the mortgage...sound familiar? If it doesn't then you have your head buried in concrete. This is a pleasant movie with some great insights of a bygone time that unfortunately is repeating itself. Terry D. A little slow moving and it lost my grandkid’s interest. It is a sweet story. Loved the young actress in “Little Miss Sunshine.” This movie was just ok. I think the fact it was of a different era kind of threw the kids off.

Based during the Great Depression of the 1930's, the Kittredge family eventually must make adaptations to their lifestyle once the father Jack K ( Chris O' Donnell) loses the car dealership. He heads to Chicago to find work. The 10 year old daughter Kit (Abigail Breslin) sticks to her goals as wanting to be a beat reporter for the Cincinnati newspaper. Julia Ormond plays the mother, who craftily rearranges her home and rents out rooms, to which they meet many different characters along the way. When the mother's safebox is stolen, all eyes turn towards Will, the newer hobo friend that had recently worked the yard for food. Not giving up, Kit and her friends decide to figure out who really did this. The police insist that the robbery was definitely an ... ***MINIMAL SPOILERS*** Rated G. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Movie
This movie really shows what it "might" have been like to live during the Depression Era. I highly recomend it, especially for children and teens that haven't a clue what it would be like to live with very little and still be content. -All American Girl products are of the highest quality, and their books & movies are true to life, taking you back into a time few of us (if any) have ever seen. They give you a small glimpse into America's past.This movie really shows what it "might" have been like to live during the Depression Era. I highly recomend it, especially for children and teens that haven't a clue what it would be like to live with very little and still be content. -All American Girl products are of the highest quality, and their books & movies are true to life, taking you back into a time few of us (if any) have ever seen.
