A tiny film with a stellar cast, DARK MATTER is based on a real-life tragedy that occurred at the University of Iowa in 1991. It stars Liu Ye as Liu Xing, a gifted cosmology student who has just arrived from Beijing. Liu Xing is thrilled to be studying with Jake Reiser (Aidan Quinn), a famous cosmology professor who takes him under his wing. Liu Xing throws himself into his studies, and dreams of one day winning the Nobel Prize for his work on dark matter theories. Despite his happiness with his work, he finds himself struggling to assimilate to American culture. He has few American friends, save for his friendship with Joanna Silver (Meryl Streep), a wealthy older woman with a passion for Chinese culture. Liu Xing continues to excel at his work, but he soon finds a major breakthrough being thwarted by the competitive and controlling Professor Reiser. His great dreams of success quickly slip from his grasp, leading to a tragic and shocking end.The film is divided into five chapters, each named for a Chinese element: Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and the narrative is pulled together by letters Lui Xing sends to his parents, which are read throughout in a voiceover. Despite the heavy subject matter, the film has a very dream-like quality, as scenes occasionally dissolve into wavering views of the cosmos. The performances from Liu Ye and Streep are incredibly moving, and their scenes together are some of the most poignant in the film. Director Chen Shi Zheng works hard to show the perspective of the troubled Liu Xing, and the extreme frustration felt by someone living in a culture that not only exploits you but often rejects you.

Fantastic Story Well Told, Yet Completely Tragic.
DARK MATTER is a film that will polarize audiences: for those who seek understanding of the clashes between science and 'religion' and the matrix from which tragedy grows the film will appeal, and for the audiences who demand tidy stories with happy resolutions the film will not please. Apparently 'based on true events', this story has many layers that invite discussion and reveals some facts about the American Academia that many would rather not know. Liu Xing (Ye Liu) comes from a poor family in Beijing, but rises to hopeful heights due to his exceptional scientific intelligence and is invited to a prestigious university to study with Cosmology professor Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn), the author of the Reiser String Theory - the entire universe is tied into a compact single ball of cosmic ... Liu Xing encounters initial success not only academically but also as a fresh young student, barely able to speak English, who is taken under the wing of the kind matron of Chinese culture, Johanna Silver (Meryl Streep). Liu Xing develops his own theory that the universe is united by massive amounts of unseen Dark Matter. When the student's theory conflicts with Reiser's theory, the negative results begin to affect each of the characters: Liu Xing sees his dream of earning a PhD in Cosmology and winning the Nobel Prize for his theory destroyed by the powers of academia and as he watches his fellow Chinese students succeed, he is plagued with low self esteem as he attempts to support his family in Beijing with money earned selling cosmetics door to door. The downfall of a simple genius destroyed by the inner workings of academia leads to unimaginable tragedy. Billy Shebar's screenplay tinkers with the story's credibility with a heavy dose of sentimentality at times, but director Shi-Zheng Chen keeps the story moving by allowing the audience to witness frequent glimpses of Liu Xing's humble Beijing home life. The star of the film is the very talented Ye Liu, but Streep and Quinn carry their rather minor roles with great dignity and understatement. This is a moving story, too frequently repeated in our campuses to overlook. There is much more to this film than first viewings reveal.

Truly Dark
"Dark Matter" is just as the title signifies. It is dark, deep and sad on so many levels. Liu is a foreign exchange student from China who is working as an assistant to a brilliant American cosmologist, Reiser (Aidan Quinn). While on the surface it appears that Reiser is all about experimentation and expanding the horizons of cosmology, particularly the genesis of the world, it quickly becomes apparent that the primary purpose of the exchange (which includes a slew of brilliant Chinese mathemeticians and science students) is to further support and expand upon Reiser's own scientific theories. However, Liu is different and cannot conform to rigid, unquestioned study. Going rogue, he releases his own cosmological theory, in opposition to Reisers. His headlong plummet outside of the ... "Dark Matter" is just as the title signifies. It is dark, deep and sad on so many levels. These are acted out in interactions between Liu and his would-be girlfriend (showing her the "galaxy" in a cup of coffee is so pathetic!) and between Liu and Joanna Silver (played by Meryl Streep) as the champion and coordinator of the Chinese exchange program. Liu clearly is not comfortable in any world, social or romantic, other than that of science and the cosmos. This is ultimately his undoing as when this one thing is taken from him, he is left with nothing but darkness.

Not Bad
I bought this movie because a colleague recommended it. As a professor at a university, I was curious to see how academia was portrayed in the film. Evidently, the story is based on a true story, yet it is difficult to know how much is true, and how much is story. A Chinese student comes to the United States for graduate school to study physics with a physicist who is his hero. The student is brilliant, wants to be brilliant, and enjoys thinking outside the box. The problem occurs when the professor is unwilling to consider anything outside his paradigm. There is also the element of academic programs trying to move graduate students through their programs quickly, hence a quantity versus quality dynamic. Overall, there isn't much dialogue on the academic side. Maybe this is due to fear ... I bought this movie because a colleague recommended it. Yet, the academics appear to be caricatures of the stereotype. Arrogant and pompous, they show little signs of wanting to have dialogue. While I concede that academics can be this way, and I certainly know a lot of them, my personal experience is that we are a lot more open minded than the film portrays. Yet, this is simply one context, and maybe the portrayal of the physicists was accurate to what really happened. Overall, the film does illustrate some of the stress and politics associated with graduate school. It also addresses some of the cultural problems for international students coming to the United States, as well as expectations students face both in the U.S. and abroad. It's not a movie you want to watch to feel good, but it is an interesting film nonetheless. I wish more movies would strive to give an accurate account of academia. This definitely moves in that direction, though still misses a little bit on that account.

Dark Matter has a few meanings
This movie to me was a little blah. It is a good movie; the premise is interesting. Meryl Streep was great in the 20 percent of the film she was in. Shocker ending, though.
