This DVD was delivered within two weeks of being ordered within Canada, from Manitoba to rural Alberta; I am very happy with the timing of the delivery. It is a rare, brand new Region 1 DVD that arrived packed in a standard small grey bubble-wrap shipping envelope. I'm highly grateful that the disc's mobility was limited during shipping. Cannonball Run II (1984): Classic Eighties Fun Movie with an All Star Cast
Story: After losing the first Cannonball race, Sheik Abdul Ben Falafel (Jamie Farr, M*A*S*H TV Series) is “ordered” by his father (Ricardo Montalban, Fantasy Island) to return to the USA and win the Cannonball so his family can claim the fastest in everything. The film picks up speed with a fun, fast, upbeat 80’s opening title theme where Highway Patrol is in pursuit of a Lamborghini driven by Susan Anton (Miss California), and Catherine Bach (Dukes of Hazzard). Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the Bandit) and friend Dom DeLuise (History of the World, Part I) give up low-paying stunt work in hope to win the big race. Dom DeLuise’s character has an identity crisis. Throughout times of trouble he suddenly appears wearing a mask and cape thinking he is a super hero named “Captain Chaos.” In super ... Pursued by mobster misfits (including played by Abe Vigoda (Barney Miller), Martin and Davis Jr. tell the mob that they are in this race to pay off their debts. Reilly gets the idea to kidnap the Sheik (Farr) for ransom so Reilly can repay his debts to another crime organization led by Telly Savalas (Kojak). Enter Shirley MacLaine (Terms of Endearment) and Marilu Henner (Taxi) dressed as nuns from a stage play who seek to make it on Broadway. They dup Reynolds (disguised as an Army General) and DeLuise (disguised as an Army private) into thinking MacLaine and Henner are real runs from “The Order of Immaculate Chastity.” They find themselves joining the race hoping to share in Reynolds and DeLuise’s fortune. Reynolds and clan drive a green Chrysler limo with a general’s star to make law enforcement think they are under a top secret military mission to get to Connecticut as fast as they can. The “nuns” are there to provide last rights in case they don’t make it. Jackie Chan (Rush Hour), and Richard Kiel (“Jaws” from 70’s James Bond films) team up as partners in the race in their high-tech Mitsubishi. Tim Conway (Carol Burnett Show) and Don Knotts (Three’s Company) have a cameo appearance as bumbling cops who pull over a white limo apparently driven by an Orangutan (from Every Which Way But Loose). Conway thinks they are on Candid Camera and plays along. To save the kidnapped Sheik, Dean Martin tells the other race drivers that we have royalty in the USA, enter Frank Sinatra (the original Rat Pack leader and who plays himself in the movie). Overall Review: The film is full of slap-stick, 80’s B-movie humor, but that is what makes it fun. What made this and the first Cannonball movie get a lot of attention in the day was the number of major actors in the film. Few movies today could ever afford to have a massive amount of Hollywood’s pop celebrities. Knowing the actors other films and backgrounds helps the humor factor a lot. A must watch are the DVD out-takes (at the end of the movie). Under $10 is a great value for this eighties classic. Movie Stats: The movie ranked #32 in box office gross sales in 1984. The first film ranked #6 in 1981. Cannonball Run II made a little over $28 million in U.S. box office sales or $58.15 million using 2010 inflation adjusted dollars. Cannonball Run II was directed by Hal Needham.

An enjoyable popcorn flick.
"Cannonball Run II" is like so many films that get their dismal judgements assigned to them by society at large, though only a fraction of the people actually saw it. Fair enough to say that "Cannonball Run" is a classic, so naturally any attempt to follow up those cinematic foot steps must be even larger, grander, funnier, and more outlandish, and if the film fails on any of these standards it must subdue to the harsh reaction of inflated standards of Joe Moviegoing Public. "Cannonball Run II" appears to be another text book example of a sequel that tried, but couldn't please audience standards. I can imagine it was quite a struggle to get all the returning cast members they were able to secure, and many assorted pop culture icons and stars of the time lent themselves to this film, and I ... Ensemble films have a lot of egos oozing around, and I imagine it's a chore to produce the best film possible under those conditions. Anyways, onto the film... "Cannonball Run II" picks up exactly a year after the original with The Sheik attempting to gain honor in the world by winning the Cannonball Run title they were unable to secure in the first film, and if not by winning, buy it. Of course its games as usual with Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, and half a dozen others battling their way cross country in assorted luxury and new era pseudo power cars while trying less than sportsman conduct to thwart eachother. Little, many, sub-plots come and go but get resolved fairly quickly to make way for new gags. In all honesty, its a basic rehash of the first with some new faces and outfits. But what sequel isn't, right? One major change that can be for better, but I'll say worse, is the reliance on slapstick. There's a heck of a lot of slapstick, and that's the main humor. Less inneundo, less Burt Reynoldisms, all the self referential humor is gone, and sadly, all of the self awareness is lost leaving us to sometimes feel like the slapstick takes itself too serious. There were some good chuckles, some very enjoyable moments, and the cast is great. I can tell they had a fun time making it, and the enviroment must have been a fun one. To tell you the truth, "Cannonball Run II" looks like a fun film to be apart of, and it translates well onto the screen. The actors look laid back and casual, which for comedy is good, and the antics make for the enjoyability of the scene. "Cannonball Run II" is also somewhat of an automotive time capsule. There's an army of then top of the line cars and rides that still can hold a awe value today. Frank Sinatra drives a 2-tone Dodge Daytona Turbo. When was the last time you saw one of those? Dean Martin drives a C4 Corvette, and what 80s film would be an 80s film without a C4 Corvette? That's right, it wouldn't be a film. There's just too many sweet and rare cars that anyone with a passing excitement for autos, American and otherwise, would be impressed by. "Cannonball Run II" doesn't have the memorable lines, doesn't have Adrienne Barbeau or her "supporting" co-stars (instead we get good ole Daisy Duke, can't complain, though how the character suddenly became younger can give one pause), it doesn't have Burt Reynolds look at the camera and smirk at the absurdity of the scenario, but IT does provide a fun time, and the fun time the cast had on set truly spills onto the viewer and makes for a very laid back, easily enjoyable viewing.
