  • Good deal for the money.

I really like the price of this unit. Compared to other routers with a similar price tag, you get a lot of bang for the buck. I have not had any of the reliability issues that I have heard some people complain about, but I tend to keep my equipment cooler than most people do, (give it room to breath, don't ever block the cooling vents on the sides/top). On the negative side, I hate the fact that when I updated the firmware I lost all of my settings, even though I backed them up. Apparently the backups from the old firmware are not compatible with the new firmware, dumb but not too big a deal. I was also disappointed by the limit of only 35 blocked keywords. I wanted to feed it a MUCH longer list than that, but oh well. I also wish that the VPN was compatible with the windows XP VPN ...

  • Inexpensive solution to VPN Client Software

I called up Netgear about purchasing their client software because I have systems at home running XP, Vista, and Windows 7. They wanted 70 dollars for their software. Just for a single license. And it doesn't even support Windows 7 yet. This isn't a review for Netgear support. If it was it would be rated poor. Their support is horrible and they wouldn't upgrade my licenses to the latest compatible version for Windows Vista (They just started supporting it in VPN software) and I bought the licenses when Vista was already out. Pretty shady.... But anyways so I found this VPN Router / Firewall device and it was less than a single client software license. I figured why not? I got the device and set it up. It was pretty straight forward if you are familiar with setting up ...

  • Cheap VPN solution for connecting two LANs

This is FVS318v3 (with firmware 3.0_28), I used them for VPN to connect two LANs that one LAN with static public IP and the other LAN with dynamic public IP. It works fine but not as stable as FVS318v1 (with firmware 2.4) which can run for months without reset. However, v3 offers 100M WAN port while v1 offers 10M WAN port. But the v3 is ok, which has a setting that I can set it automatically re-boot daily at the time I specified. With two of these devices, you do NOT need VPN software installed at client computers to have the VPN connections. That is a huge plus for these VPN routers. If you only have one of it at the LAN with static public IP, you can still VPN to it by using VPN client software such as ShrewSoft.

  • Netgear FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall

Does a pretty good job. Older technology, so you don't have wifi apps to control from phone, and track what malware is coming at your system. Upload speeds did not increase as I hoped.

  • Best Router that I have ever owned

I have been using a Netgear FVS318 for over 2 years. Replaced a Linksys router that failed. Reason for the purchase of this unit was as a backup. My ISP was having trouble and of course they always blame it on the customer first so I decided to purchase another FVS318 just to make sure that it was not my system that was giving them problems. I have never had a problem with my NetGear unit. Set up is a no brainer. Just plugged it in and reset the modem and it was on. Very user friendly unit. In fact I could not live without this 8 port box. My world would collapse. I would recomend this unit to anyone that likes ease of setup and operation. The FVS318 just sets there and blinks at me. I print though the network and also have VoIP on the system ahead of the router. The old NetGear ...
