Product Information

The Nature of the Beast is a New York Times bestselling Chief Inspector Gamache novel from Louise Penny. Hardly a day goes by when nine year old Laurent Lepage doesn't cry wolf. From alien invasions, to walking trees, to winged beasts in the woods, to dinosaurs spotted in the village of Three Pines, his tales are so extraordinary no one can possibly believe him. Including Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache, who now live in the little Quebec village. But when the boy disappears, the villagers are faced with the possibility that one of his tall tales might have been true. And so begins a frantic search for the boy and the truth. What they uncover deep in the forest sets off a sequence of events that leads to murder, leads to an old crime, leads to an old betrayal. Leads right to the door of an old poet. And now it is now, writes Ruth Zardo. And the dark thing is here. A monster once visited Three Pines. And put down deep roots. And now, Ruth knows, it is back. Armand Gamache, the former head of homicide for the Sûreté du Québec, must face the possibility that, in not believing the boy, he himself played a terrible part in what happens next.

Reviews
Penny sustains her high-wire act, creating characters of remarkable depth in an exhilarating whodunit., A strong sense of place, a multilayered plot, and well-crafted (and for Penny's fans, familiar) characters combine for a thoughtful, intriguing tale. More than a simple mystery, Penny's novel peels away the emotional and psychological layers of the inhabitants of Three Pines., This series dominates best-seller lists and award lists for a reason. Penny tells powerful stories of damage and healing in the human heart, leavened with affection, humor and thank goodness redemption., Perceptive and perfectly paced... the prose is remarkably fresh, filled with illuminating and delightful turns of phrase., [M]agical....[T]he perfect reminder of the dark side of human nature, but that side does not always win out. Penny is an expert at pulling away the surface of her characters to expose their deeper-and often ugly-layers, always doing so with a direct but compassionate hand., [A] work of art... that transcends genre, engages heart and mind and, like all of Penny's work, leaves the reader awestruck by the depth of her skills and the decency of her spirit., Praise for the #1 New York Times Best Seller The Long Way Home "Splendid....Ms. Penny's books mix some classic elements of the police procedural with a deep-delving psychology, as well as a sorrowful sense of the precarious nature of human goodness, and the persistence of its opposite, even in rural Edens like Three Pines." - The New York Times "[A] work of art... that transcends genre, engages heart and mind and, like all of Penny's work, leaves the reader awestruck by the depth of her skills and the decency of her spirit." -Richmond Times-Dispatch "Another gem from the endlessly astonishing Penny." - Booklist (starred review) "This series dominates best-seller lists and award lists for a reason. Penny tells powerful stories of damage and healing in the human heart, leavened with affection, humor and thank goodness redemption." - The Charlotte Observer "Perceptive and perfectly paced… the prose is remarkably fresh, filled with illuminating and delightful turns of phrase." - Publishers Weekly "The emotional depth accessed here is both a wonder and a joy to uncover." - Kirkus Reviews "Penny's skill at developing quirky, complex, and fragile characters is once again on display." - RT Book Reviews, Three Pines again proves no refuge in Penny's stellar [ The Nature of the Beast ]...fans will delight in [her] continued complex fleshing out of characters they have come to love., Louise Penny is unsurpassed at building a sense of heart-stopping urgency. Sometimes the stakes are personal: a marriage, a character's sanity. Sometimes the threat is to the village, a culture or even to the province of Quebec. This time Penny manages to create a threat that could truly be worldwide, and to place its future in the hands of our friends in Three Pines., This series dominates best-seller lists and award lists for a reason. • "The Nature of the Beast" is the 11 mystery in the Chief Inspector Gamache Series. Not to be missed!

Another mesmerizing Inspector Gamache novel by Penny. It details life in the charming Canadian hamlet of Three Pines and deals with the issues of our technological age, specifically the unknown dangers of a specific piece of hidden weaponry. The lives of its denizens are so artfully drawn that you come to consider them as unique, often eccentric, members of your own family. I want to live here, and will be heart broken when this series ends...

  • the nature of the beast - louise penny

the entire inspector gamache series by Ms. Penny deserves reading. her moral and ethical constructs in the entire series are notable for the detective genre. few authors attempt to rise to such a challenge while keeping the plot and depth of character of her protaganests moving to an inexorable conclusion. this entire series, of which this is the latest, should be read from the first novel up to this one. this writing does not get any better!

  • Outstanding

Another in this outstanding series. It is a very satisfying mystery & so much more. Ms. Penny has the rare ability to understand the deep complexities of the human soul & put it down on paper. The conversation between Gamache & the sociopath Fleming is itself worth the read as they thrust & parry for advantage.

  • Stunning in depth and revelation

Louise Penny does it again -- we have not begun to plumb the depths of Three Pines but, with Gamache involved it won't be long before this latest mystery is solved. It's a wonderful, beautifully written tale -- so hang on and prepare to be happily enthralled to the very end.
