À propos de ce produit

Product Information

The Beatles' songs may have provided the soundtrack for the lives of those coming of age in the 1960s, but their extensive catalogue acts as the literal soundtrack in this romantic musical from visionary director Julie Taymor. Newcomer Jim Sturgess stars as Jude, a young man working on the docks in Liverpool. Eager to escape, he travels to Princeton where he meets Max (Joe Anderson). But it's his meeting with Max's younger sister Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) that changes him. They quickly fall in love, but their relationship is tested by the chaos of the late 1960s and Max's unwilling tour in Vietnam. Throughout the film, characters burst into classics from the Beatles: frat boys sing "With a Little Help from My Friends," while Uncle Sam bursts from a recruitment poster with strains of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." U2's Bono makes a cameo as a counterculture leader and croons "I Am the Walrus," and actor-comedian Eddie Izzard provides a trippy rendition of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite."Sturgess has the voice, charm, and good looks to fill Shea Stadium with hordes of screaming young women. As Jude, he's earnest and certainly capable of carrying the film. Wood capably balances Lucy's naiveté and knowledge, easily moving between her love for Jude and her passion for her cause. Though the performances are strong, it's Taymor's gifted direction that makes ACROSS THE UNIVERSE so fascinating to watch. As in FRIDA and Broadway's THE LION KING, she proves herself an artist with creativity few can match. Director of photography Bruno Delbonnel also deserves praise for his contribution to the striking visuals. He has worked with Jean-Pierre Jeunet on AMELIE and A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, and he brings the same sense of romance and whimsy to this unique musical.

  • An Enjoyable Movie with Flaws

The main characters are excellent, as is the capturing the conflicted realities of 1968. The late Joe Cocker's appearance in "Come Together" is a joy to behold. Bono, playing Dr. Robert was well case, however some of his dialogue was a bit too "out there". The entire scene with Mr. Kite, played by Eddie Izzard, should have been either recast or altogether cut from the movie. Izzard's performance is so far over the top that it takes all the enjoyment out of the song and part of the movie. The psychedelic effects are a bit overdone, but still effective. I give it four stars for the performance of the main characters, their musical renditions, a basically well plotted script, and the movie's high entertainment value. Just skip the entire Mr. Kite scene, and the movie is better for it.

  • Well crafted, original and very enjoyable

The movie was well crafted and well choreographed. I was surprised how the director & writer were able to make the plot of the movie work well with the songs. Having grown up in the 60's it brought back a lot of memories, so good, some bad, but all the memories were welcome. The only downside to the movie was the sequence after Bono's cameo in "I Am the Walrus" during this sequence the director lost track of the story line and, in my opinion, got way off course with the plot of the movie. However, Bono's performance was very good and he gave a lot of meaning to a well liked song. Overall the movie was enjoyable and I would recommend it.

  • Magical voyage back to the Sixties !

Excellent movie, will be extremely well-recieved by Beatles fans everywhere. I liked the fact that the actors aren't well known, they are all very talented and this was a great opportunity for them to showcase their fantastic acting ability and powerful singing voices. This film took my mind away to a time of hope and turmoil, uncertainty and a battle to let freedom reign. Regrettably, my bf didn't like it because he felt there was too much singing. In my opinion, there was a comfortable balance between singing performances and dialogue/storeyline. I didn't feel it was like your typical "theatrical musical" movie by any stretch. Put on your wedge heels and stick a flower in your hair, this film will take you on a trip to a time past but never forgotten.

  • At First.......

I just got this musical yesterday.I had some mixed feelings about it at first. It really wasn't quite what I expected.Once I got past the expectation of Beatle songs not sounding like the Beatles themselves,I really loved it.(I'm very leary of other artists doing Beatle songs)When I first heard "I wanna Hold Your Hand" It did bring a tear to my eye. It's such a great love song, but fans are used to hearing it as a rock & roll number. Most of the songs are done with the general feel of the song as it was intended when it was composed. The characters in this film are named after characters in Beatle songs.Jude,Lucy,Sadie,Prudence and so on.There are some cameo appearances from Joe Cocker,Bono and Selma Hayek. But the rest on the actors are unknowns. This is an amazing film for young adults (and us ...

  • Stunning music, visuals and performances all around!

What more could you ask of a musical? All the Beatles music is woven, perhaps even reborn out of the mouths of these ultra talented cast members it a stunning visual story. There are moments that take your breath away and bring up such visceral reactions. Director Julie Taymor is a national treasure. A true artist compared to the Michael Bay hacks! If you love the Beatles you'll love the music. If you hate the Beatles you'll love the music. Every song feels intrinsically tied to the story as if they didn't exist before this movie. If you know the songs as well as I do it only adds to your pleasure as you watch how the lyrics paired to powerful imagery. Just see it. Love it. Watch it again when you're sick on the couch. You'll be transformed.
