  • TOMMY by The Who

For fans of The Who, this movie is "must see." For fans of rock operas, this is a "should probably see." For lovers of musicals, this is a "maybe see." It has excellent music and performances by Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Elton John, Ann-Margaret, and more. Jack Nicholson is in it, and so is Oliver Reed. The Who's lead singer stars as Tommy, and Keith Moon (The Who's drummer) is weird Uncle Ernie. As for the plot, young Tommy witnesses a traumatic event the turns him deaf, mute, and blind. The movie tracks Tommy's experiences and his mother's various attempts to "cure" him through to his eventual awakening.

  • Insane but great

A must for all Who fans, but any fan of good rock music will like the film, my wife has never heard much of the Who's music but she liked it. This is a rather crazy adaptation of the Townshend masterpiece, Ken Russell is an oddball director but the music is so fantastic it all somehow works, there is no dialogue at all, every word is sung, making this an opera rather than a musical. There are many star turns, Tina Turner is amazing, her version of Acid Queen is probably one of my favorite bits of the film, but Eric Clapton, Elton John and many others are all there (and I don't like either of them and still enjoyed it!). Ollie Reed can't sing but his charisma carries him through in a Rex Harrison sort of way, and who wouldn't pay to see Anne Margaret roll about in chocolate? She is really ...

  • Interesting....

Chances are, if you don't like and/or appreciate the Who or the obscure art of the rock opera, then you probably won't like this movie. I like and/or appreciate both, so I liked this movie. The music sounded considerable different from the original album. It has a bit more of a pop/keyboard-oriented sound, but it fits well with the film and does well for the films many performers. Of particular note is Elton John's performance as the Pinball Wizard, where he does an incredible rendition of the character's theme. On a more minor note, who knew Jack Nicholson could sing? Towards the end, the movie feels a little overlong, and probably could have used a few minutes shaved off. Overall, the movie is pretty darned good all things considered, and makes for a great midnight movie showing.

  • Tommy...Atruly classic rock opera

This is a classic early 1970's rock opera. Anyone who grew up in the '70's will appreciate this video. Tommy is a deaf, dumb and blind child. He gains fame and fortune as a pinball phenomena and goes on to found a cult-like ministry based upon his fame. His unscrupulous father naturally milks this for all its worth. A sexy-as-always Ann Margaret portreys Tommy's mother. A highlight of this film is Elton John appearing as the Pinball Wizard (and performing the song of the same title), who is dethroned of that title by Tommy. A bit bizarre, but only in the true tradition of '70's rock operas. Any fan of The Who, Elton John, Ann Margaret, or the '70's pop culture will enjoy this classic rock opera.

  • Great movie, great find.

Exactly as described! DVD cover and disc were both in great shape. Fast and easy shipping. Love this movie and soundtrack. Thanks so much :)
