A marginalized ethnic become a MLB superstar despite social bias...
What a read. A lot of misguided reactions to the heartfelt candor behind this memoir won't come from students of the game or consider the study of social bias in pro team sports. The upshot of Mike's long shot journey in MLB to become the best offensive catcher in Major League history is a manic yet masterful story of constant struggle and triumph against ethnic marginalization. This is the gut check life story of a man set up to fail by the system only to prove gatekeepers wrong and then become one of the greats despite what bean count money men suits put him through. A mini slugger star in Little League who would have been prized from the T-ball cradle if he were a Smith or Jones, Piazza's potential was lauded by none other than Ted Williams and picked as an LA late dead end draft round ... What a read. A lot of misguided reactions to the heartfelt candor behind this memoir won't come from students of the game or consider the study of social bias in pro team sports. The upshot of Mike's long shot journey in MLB to become the best offensive catcher in Major League history is a manic yet masterful story of constant struggle and triumph against ethnic marginalization. A mini slugger star in Little League who would have been prized from the T-ball cradle if he were a Smith or Jones, Piazza's potential was lauded by none other than Ted Williams and picked as an LA late dead end draft round favor to sweet science ambassador, Tom LaSorda. However, scouts begrudged his minors debut and coaches were rooting against him to make it out of a social preference for lesser players. And nothing but career roadblock obstacles salted the skin-deep wounds of his struggle to prove himself, both before and after he became a depreciated castoff legend. Given that his well to do dad missed out on a slur free chance to own a club due to racial intolerance, by the time Mike hit his stride in LA, he had a chip on his shoulder born of voweled surname and olive skinned bias that he never readily admits but was the case throughout his mercurial career. Chiding the LA roster for being a Tower of Babel joke, he was chastised for pointing out the obvious. Then when he held out for a fair full market value LAD contract, it was not so much a grandstanding demand as it was a proud plea for the respect that he was denied in his evolution as a ballplayer. The result of the mega trade insult that followed demoralized his confidence and star power in his prime and curtailed him into a bicoastal career that devalued his shelf life as a franchise player. Thereafter, he had to readjust his game play mentality to fit in a baseball world that alienated his talent and status. Interestingly enough, this sort of star trade stigma victimized many Italian-American players in the diamond dream annals like Rocky Colavito and others. The moral of the story is that both LA and Cleveland keep trading away a lot of guys like Mike and they have been cursed for it. Even with the Mets 2000 subway series appearance, there's a bittersweet tone and temperament to this book that's topical since he's allegedly been lumped in with the roid rage generation and snubbed for Hall of Fame induction all these years later. NY Yanks have always had a rich history of Italian-American players and have 27 rings to show for it. So you'd think the sport would have learned from its IA marginalization elsewhere in MLB by now. But the status quo limbo still remains the same. This is why MLB 2010 MVP Joey Votto had to come from Canada in order to make it in the US. Up against institutional bias, MP's post Dodgers marquee value was stunted as damaged goods. For when he became a world class player, he was denied elite equity as a blossomed superstar and traded in a game statistically notorious for marginalizing players with vowels at the end of their names. Without insider help, you wonder how others like him fare with no cheerleaders to sing their praises. In the end Mike apologizes for the ego defense mechanism that rendered him uptight and unable to enjoy the game in light of his hard fought road to glory.

Piazza is Hot!
Love Piazza! I've had a crush on him since I was 15 and my sisters and I would go see him every week when he played for the Dodgers. I would dress in his jersey and blue and white miniskirt and go crazy over him at the games. The book was awesome all the details of his life before during and a little after his retirement. It was interesting and I learned quite a bit about him things I never knew. Too bad he married the wrong lady! Lol!Love Piazza! Great hitting catcher, a bit self-centered
It can be convincingly argued that Mike Piazza is the best hitting catcher of all time. He certainly put up the numbers while surviving the rigors of the most demanding position in baseball. He used the title “Long Shot” to emphasize how low he was in the draft of 1988, in fact he was the last player selected. Even Piazza admits that he was drafted by the Dodgers as a favor from Tommy Lasorda to his buddy, Piazza’s father. Yet, with the backing and encouragement he received starting from a very young age, there is no question that Piazza received favors that few prospects have been the beneficiary of. For example, how many teenage boys have received personal hitting instruction from Ted Williams? He also put in the hours of practice and study of the game, his father built a batting cage ... It can be convincingly argued that Mike Piazza is the best hitting catcher of all time. He certainly put up the numbers while surviving the rigors of the most demanding position in baseball. While Piazza is an interesting baseball personality, the book is tainted by what is at times very close to whining. While his complaints about the media and fans in New York are founded, his prose indicates that he was being singled out. I have been following baseball and reading books about baseball for years and recall reading how the press and fans hounded Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle and other stars. Mickey Mantle was booed a great deal in the first half of his career with New York. Piazza also has words of criticism of the way baseball teams bring along players from Latin America, helping them with translators and other aspects of fitting in. Given how much some of these players are worth and the fact that many are kids from very poor backgrounds, aiding those players is simply good business. While there are some high moments, I found the whining aspects annoying. Others that played in New York received far harsher treatment, by both the fans and the press.
