A View from the Road
I purchased this DVD based on a verbal recommendation of a colleague whom I respect within our technical field. His stridant phrases led me to sense that there might be a gold nugget in this unpronouncible (native Hopi Americans, on whose language the title is based, might take umbridge with the mangled pronounciations I have heard), visual/musical trip. Referring to the oft used phrase that "one cannot return to their roots", however, I found that this effort is a very pale shadow of the "Mondo" movie series that were led off by "Mondo Cane" which was released in 1962. The term "pseudodocumentary" leapt from that beginning and there have been a wild-ride of "Mondo" films for the past 40+ years. The Italians who made the original ... The Italians who made the original "Mondo Cane" were truly breaking new cinematic ground with that movie genra. "Koyaanisqatsi" (1982),and its two franchise following efforts, has more artistic pretensions that a junk yard dog has fleas! The piece ends up being a great metaphor for the very distinct difference between the earthy grittiness of the 1960's and the teflon political correctness from the 1980's until today. In a very real way, having experienced both eras I have to feel very sad for the current generation of searchers who view the slickness of "Koyaanisqatsi" as if it has a deep heartfelt meaning that could point out where the world is going and how we, as riders on this blue dot, need to take on a more positive, influencing, role in that trip. The fact that Coppola attached his name to this project, for purposes that are solely money driven, just showes how far the mighty have fallen in becoming PC and further separates this series from the earlier "Cane". At bottom, I see the "Koyaanisqatsi" as a nice, elevator-style, treatment of Glass's music but a far, far, cry from what has come before. Borrow it from the library!

Beauty is where you find it.
I have seen this film several times and seeing it again is always an experience almost like the first viewing. It's powerful. This is about events and the dynamic balance of life that was already in a strange state 50 years ago when the film was made. There's no narration, no actors, no message in any specific way, but the pure vision is beautiful and that by itself is enough. It's both exhilarating and exhausting as you're left with hope for tomorrow and despair for today. The photography alone is a master work, but also the accompanying sound track by Phillip Glass sharpens the visuals with it's mantra-like chanting. Time capsule from 1982
Aside from the incredible imagery, and the story line (don't let the director kid you; there's definitely an intended message), this film is particularly interesting to watch from a back-in-time perspective. Crowds of people reading news papers and not checking their cell phones. Crowds of people smiling and making eye contact. USA manufacturing scenes takes the viewer back to a time when you didn't have to go to Asia to find such scenes. Streets and freeways full of American built automobiles. A modern cinematic tour de force
The characters aren’t “engaging” simply because this film stars no “characters”—it is an astounding narrative, both a paean to, and a scathing commentary on, 20th century living... an example of cinema verité. It also features a lush score composed by Philip Glass. FIVE STARS.

Life forming films
I first watched Koyaanisqatsi on HULU.com. I watched it 3 times in fact. During the 3rd watch I cried at one point and said outloud,"My God...what have we done?" I was referring to what mankind has done to the earth and to himself as a social being. I needed to have this film so I looked it up on half.dot, found and bought it. I have a small collection of films that I call "informative" films. They inform and enlighten me in a special way that other movies do not. These films are more than simple entertainment.I make concerted attempts to share my collection with others, wanting to see their response, wanting to see if they have an orientation to life similar to mine. Not everyone has enjoyed watching Koyaanisqatsi with me. To most I suppose the film isn't ... I first watched Koyaanisqatsi on HULU.com. I watched it 3 times in fact. There is nothing about this film I dislike...but that's just me I suppose. I recommend it for people who ponder and contemplate the purpose behind the super-complexity of civilized life. I recommend the film to those who wish for or need a strong dose of validation to feelings of alienation in an apparently chaotic and out-of-control world.
