Product Information

In the nonfiction tradition of John Berendt (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and Erik Larson (The Devil in the White City), New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston presents a gripping account of crime and punishment in the lush hills surrounding Florence, Italy. In 2000, Douglas Preston fulfilled a dream to move his family to Italy. Then he discovered that the olive grove in front of their 14th century farmhouse had been the scene of the most infamous double-murders in Italian history, committed by a serial killer known as the Monster of Florence. Preston, intrigued, meets Italian investigative journalist Mario Spezi to learn more. This is the true story of their search for--and identification of--the man they believe committed the crimes, and their chilling interview with him. And then, in a strange twist of fate, Preston and Spezi themselves become targets of the police investigation. Preston has his phone tapped, is interrogated, and told to leave the country. Spezi fares worse: he is thrown into Italy's grim Capanne prison, accused of being the Monster of Florence himself. Like one of Preston's thrillers, The Monster Of Florence, tells a remarkable and harrowing story involving murder, mutilation, and suicide-and at the center of it, Preston and Spezi, caught in a bizarre prosecutorial vendetta.

  • A BOOK CLUB BOOK!!!

Had to get this book for my book club. Got a great price....thanks eBay. Book was not up to par. It had a lsit of the cast of characters which was needed, since there were so many people. First part was a bit confusing, and boring. Got to Part Two and things started moving. It is a good story, not told that well. Preston is a good writer, so I was eager to read it. Not his best book. But, if you have to read it, plod along. It does get better. An interesting mystery that is NEVER solved. Perhaps you can decide who is the Killer!!!!

  • Great True Thriller

Little known in America until THE MONSTER OF FLORENCE was published, this true multi murder mystery is masterfully fleshed out and detailed by Preston. Several dating couples were murdered as they sought seclusion in their cars in various lover's lanes around Florence, Italy. Ranging over a ten year period, no one was ever brought to justice although the authorities had a field day rounding up the usual suspects. In a style very similar to the Son of Sam ambush murders in New York, the Monster added a new twist, the mutilation of the female victims. Dark stuff but wonderfully written.

  • True crime that reads like the "Keystone Cops" meet "The Pink Panther."

It reads like a novel. I do not read much non-fiction, but I thought I would try this as I am a fan of Douglas Preston. When you compare police procedure as we know it here, the story is appalling. The term "preserve the evidence" is unknown. So many people are accused, arrested, tried, jailed, and released it is unbelievable. One of the investigators refer to as being "in a Pink Panther movie." It is worth the read.

Really good book. Turns from historical crime account to real life crime thriller.
