  • Not for everyone...

Wow, where do I begin? First of all, I am amazed that the author managed to escape his childhood without becoming cynical and bitter. The book is a tell all true story of Augusten's growing up years. The reader will NOT be able to put the book down because despite it's bizarreness it is also wickedly funny. I would not recommend it to everyone. This book is not for the faint of heart. If you have a problem with homosexual issues, pedophiles, coarse language, and mental illness then please look elsewhere! However, I found it compelling and could not look away. The "little boy lost" is all I could thing about...my heart just broke for him. Every single adult that he looked up to or cared about either abandoned or betrayed him in some way. The reader will want to root for Augusten as he ...

  • Running with Scissors

This book caught me offguard. I bought it because I kept seeing it everywhere and saw that it was a NY Times Bestseller. After I read it, I had mixed feelings about it, really. I thought it was very powerful and emotionally distressing, however at the same time I found it astonishing that the author was able to maintain a sense of humor allthewhile. It touches on subjects that most prefer not to even think about - like homosexuality, abuse and neglect - but it opens your mind and your heart to know that there are children out there who go through this. Ultimately, if you are uncomfortable reading about abuse or homosexuality I don't think you will particularly enjoy it. Otherwise, I think it is worth reading ... the author has a special "voice" that engages the reader and takes you through ...

  • NOT WORTH SPENDING THE MONEY FOR IT

After seeing the previews for the movie and seeing the book on sale, I had such great expectations for this book. Once I purchased it I waited until I had a lot of time to actually sit down and read it in a couple of sittings! BOY was that a mistake! While I always force myself to finish books as they are my passion, I was absolutely disillusioned and disgusted with this book. This book has been exhaulted as being "hilarious, sad, weird, and off-beat." Being a retired law enforcement officer, I have seen my fair share of disgusting and gross stuff, but I had a hard time believing that ANYONE would continue to live in such squaller and filth and admist such chaos, let alone be willing to admit to it in a memoir. As far as the doctor, as a trained professional, where the heck was his head ...

  • Well written but disturbing

Although "humor" was an accolade often attributed to this book in reviews, I just couldn't get beyond the overwhelming sadness. Abandonment by both parents, pedophilia, psychological abuse by a "trusted" physician, "funny" sociopathic behavior. . . Yes, it was well written, but the excellence in that area could have better served the topic. The author seemed to want the reader to accept the circumstances enough to be able to laugh at them. I just couldn't make that leap.

  • Beautiful new book - Amazing price for a new book

I read great reviews about this book and have wanted to buy it for some time now. So glad I did. My daughter recommended I read it and she loved this book. I love books that are of course well written and also tend towards darker material. I bought quite a few books at once so I have not had time to read them all. This is next on my list. I may read this one while reading one of the others I bought at the same time. So many great books, alas, so little time! Very glad I made this purchase and am happy with the whole experience of buying books on ebay.
