Product Information

Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker, SEX AND THE CITY) has a highly unusual job in this at times cartoonish romantic comedy: she's an interventionist. What this means is that parents of young men who are still living at home well into adulthood can hire her to date their sons, which lends the often troubled men the fortitude to strike out on their own. Trip (Matthew McConaughey) seemingly fits this description perfectly; a 35-year-old extreme sports enthusiast and boat salesman, he uses his living situation to quickly end any relationship that becomes too serious. Trip's doting mother (Kathy Bates) and quirky father (former quarterbackTerry Bradshaw) hire Paula at their friends' adamant recommendation, and she sets about her tried-and-true method of winning Trip over. A few obstacles emerge, however, as Trip's buddy Ace (Justin Bartha) finds out the truth, and must be bribed by a date with Paula's hilariously hostile roommate Kit (Zooey Deschanel). Paula also discovers a few things about Trip's past that make her realize how different he is from the rest of her clients, but just as she begins to develop real feelings for him, disaster strikes.Though somewhat meandering in its plotline, some of the best and funniest moments in FAILURE TO LAUNCH are provided by its supporting cast. Deschanel provides dry, intelligent humor in a subplot involving a mockingbird that's taken up residence outside her window, as well as her courtship by adoring suitor Ace. Bates as usual gives a complex performance, doing much with the part provided for her, while a game Bradshaw is appealing in his eccentricities. The film's somewhat fantastical plot is quickly eclipsed by the charm of the characters, the irresistible slapstick humor, and, in the end, heartwarming sentiment and lessons learned.

    Failure to Launch (2006) Movie Review

    It's a Keeper! Funny, Witty and Very Entertaining I watched Failure to Launch on an afternoon flight from London to Miami and laughed at practically every scene...but that's me. Laughing out-loud on an airplane was getting a little embarrassing, but what the heck, I was having fun. The appealing on screen chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, and the great-story line, made Failure to Launch entertaining from start to finish. Their characters, Tripp and Paula, meet when Tripp's parents, played by Kathy Bates and Terry Bradsaw, hire Paula, a professional who specializes in getting 30+ year-old men out of their parent's home and living on their own.     Not the same boring romantic comedy.

    So many times a romantic comedy bores you with the same old predictable story. With two good looking people falling in love, a dry-humored "tell it like it is" roommate, and two parents desperate to rid the house of their adult son, Failure to Launch exceeds expectations for a romantic comedy. Sarah Jessica Parker has made a career of "dating men" in order to cause them to move out of their parent's homes. Matthew McConaughey is one of these men and she is convinced he is an open and shut case. Of course, his charms are too much for her to resist and she falls hard. Sounds like the typical romantic comedy, right? Wrong. This movie adds so many other facets that you end up loving it.     Cute but Predictable!

    This movie was pretty good. I thought it was kind of cute but then I am a Matthew McConaughey fan anyway. Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) is a 35 year old still living with his parents. His mom waits on him hand and foot from wonderful food to laundry service so why would he want to leave? His mom and dad are desperate to finally get him OUT of the house so they hire Paula (Jessica Parker)to fall in love with him and hopefully make him decide to move out of the house and on his own. The two hit if off and Paula has Tripp right were she wants him when Tripp finds out that Paula was hired by his parents to date him.     At 35, Tripp has an interesting job, a hip car, a passion for sailing, and a great house - trouble is, he lives with his parents. They want him out, so they hire Paula, an "interventionist," who has a formula in these cases: chance encounter, get him to ask her out, involve him in a trauma, meet his friends and get their nod, delay sex, have him teach her something, then launch him. It's worked up to now, but this gets complicated when Tripp thinks she's getting too serious and one of his pals is attracted to Paula's deadpan, semi-alcoholic roommate, who's plagued by a mocking bird. Too many secrets may cancel the launch, and what if Paula really likes him? Who can intervene then?

    Failure to Launch - My Life Story

    Okay, so I'm not 35 years old like Tripp (Matthew McCanaughey), but this movie tells the familiar story of kids who just won't move out (like me!). His mom (like many moms do) does everything for him from cooking his meals to washing his clothes. Although his mom doesn't seem to mind too much, she and her husband decide it is time to get him out of the house. So they hire Paula (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) to date him and make him want to be independent. Paula is a professional get-sons-out-of-the-house and has a reputation of succeeding every time she is hired by parents like Tripp's parents.
