Braddock (Russell Crowe), a heavyweight contender from New Jersey nicknamed "the Bulldog of Bergen," who lost his fame and fortune during the Great Depression only to win the hearts of the downtrodden during a spectacular comeback. Crowe is masterful as Braddock, with Renee Zellweger playing his wife, and Paul Giamatti as his loyal friend and manager, Joe Gould. The sharply observed script devotes a significant amount of screen time to the domestic struggles of Braddock's family; developing character and place with a wealth of period detail, so when the comeback starts, the payoff is enormous. The matches themselves are unforgettable: raw, intense, riveting, with more than a passing stylistic nod to Martin Scorsese's groundbreaking 1980 film, RAGING BULL. Though it may sound a bit formulaic, one should remember that this is the true and "original" underdog boxer story from which all others hail, and it's riveted together with true craftsmanship. Howard has a real skill for plucking audience members' heartstrings, and the performances are first-rate. Giamatti and Crowe play off each other in a rapport perfectly suited to their roles, especially at the ring, where the one's manic intensity makes a perfect contrast to the other's warrior grace.

A Second Chance
An inspirational story of a second chance based on a life story about heavyweight boxer James J. Braddock. Great casting; Crowe, Zellweger, Giamatti, McGill, and Bierko nailed their respective roles. Another Ron Howard triumph!

Better than I expected! An Inspiring Story! See it!
Cinderella Man is one of the best films of 2005. It is based on a true story about a boxer named James J. Braddock (who was injured and down on his luck) during the Great Depression. Braddock was a heavyweight contender from New Jersey (nicknamed "the Bulldog of Bergen") who lost everything and then staged a great comeback that inspired a nation to believe in the miracles. It was directed by Ron Howard and starred Russell Crowe. They previously worked together on the Oscar-winning movie, A BEAUTIFUL MIND. This movie is a little slow at times but overall, it is a great movie with strong performances especially by Russell Crowe. It's one of those against-the-odds, underdog stories that tugs at your heart and brings a smile to your face. It's a good boxing film. I liked that it showed ... If you like sports movies such as Any Given Sunday, Cool Runnings, Major League, Ice Princess, The Replacements, 61, Unnecessary Roughness, A League of Their Own, The Cutting Edge, Wildcats, Raging Bull, Rocky, etc. then, you will probably like this one.

May be best boxing movie ever.
The setting and scenery gives a person the one of best looks at the Depression Era from a handful of well-defined characters. The boxer's kids and wife have to live through the fade of a proud boxer's career as injuries have left him a shadow of his original boxing self. Gentleman JIm Braddock takes almost any job, even with little work available. A random fight turns up even though the boxing commission has pulled his license. Braddock discovers that from months of not fighting, his injuries have healed and fights his way back to his become a real Rocky and win or lose, he becomes a real people's champion. His manager almost steals the movie. Russell Crowe stars and Renee Zellweger becomes his "Adrian" A little corny and squeezing every bit of sentimentality it can, based on real-life ... The best movie you've never heard of
For some reason Cinderella Man flopped at the box office. I didn't even really know about it until I watched the DVD. For the most part I really like Russell Crowe, and this film definitely adds to his growing collection of great movies. This true story is about a boxer named Jim Braddock who is in the prime of his career right as the Great Depression hits. His family quickly goes from living the high life to living in the slums as work becomes scarce and times get difficult trying to feed his family and keep them healthy and happy. It's a very human story and it will not disappoint. Renee Zellweger plays Russell Crowe's wife and does a really nice job. Great Film
Wonderful film about second chances. It takes place in the boxing world. I much preferred this to "Raging Bull", "Rocky", and "Great White Hope". Don't get me wrong...those three films are fantastic.
