Scenic Chicago, cop buddies at their best
"Running Scared" was released in 1986 at the height of scenic Chicago-set movies. The opening credits are shown over summer scenes but as the film moves into the actual story, the season changes to winter and you see grittier views of Chicago streets covered in snow and slush. And most of the movie takes place when the Christmas decorations are up. What a way to open! Danny Costanzo (Billy Crystal) and Ray Hughes (Gregory Hines) are two highly successful Chicago police detectives who approach their jobs with the lightheartedness of two boys playing cops and robbers. Their target in this photoplay is Spanish Godfather would-be Julio Gonzales (Jimmy Smits). There are so many things to like about this film, but rated right up there would be the snappy dialogue and Danny and Ray's ... Or, how about having the suspect recite his own Miranda rights? And there's plenty of broken Spanish used in a humorous way. (ie, "No hablo Ingles." "Hablo 'Smith & Wesson'?"). A trip to Key West (during a mandated leave of absence), and a few interrupted romantic scenes provide opportunities for eye candy in this mostly male dominated movie. My favorite part is when a car chase moves from the interstate to the EL tracks and Danny warns Ray to stay away from the 3rd rail because there's 600 volts on it. Ray counters with the cliche "It's not the voltage that gets you, it's the amps." Having worked in the electrical field all my life I love it. Leading to the finale, Gonzales has kidnapped Danny's ex-wife Anna (the lovely Darlanne Fluegel) to exchange for confiscated cocaine. Even the potentially tense showdown in the towering State of Illinois Building is played as comedy. UPC 027616867780 is a widescreen version which preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio and you get the original trailer. With great views of Chicago, trains, Christmas, and lots of laughs--what more could you ask for?

Great buddy movie!
"Running Scared" stars Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two Chicago police detectives who are determined to bring down a crime boss before retiring. The relationship between the two leads, comedy and great action scenes make it well worth watching. There's also a couple good scenes about police coping with changes in society. It can't escape some of the cliches in cop movies (bad guy making things personal, high body count and cops breaking procedures to bring down the criminals), but it's definitely an entertaining movie that knows how to keep the pace moving."Running Scared" stars Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two Chicago police detectives who are determined to bring down a crime boss before retiring. Very cute older movie
Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are like the odd couple in his older movie I bought here on eBay for a nice cheap price. They are Two unsual cops in the windy city who march to their own beat of the drum, The one thing that stuck out most in my mind about this movie is how far movies have come or went I should say, This was a pleastent comedy nothing like the vulgar foul mouth comedies of today, These two were funny without being groos or saying the F word every 3seconds. I like buying older movies just for that reason alone. and this movie was a fine example of a funny movie with out the filth. Billy And Gregory are most certaily an odd pair and it makes the movie work well. I think anyone who is sick of filth but still like real comedy will enjoy this film. I gave it a good for a ... Favorite movie, but I don't know French :(
I had asked if it was closed captioned and it was......in French, lol. Since I am late deafened and don't know French, I'm not able to watch this dvd :( Sooooo disappointed :( We have the video but no longer have a VCR and I do miss the movie!

Running scared is very funny for a serious cop movies. Its based on detectives in chicago and billy Crystal is a native. I believe. So he did it right.
