James Bond junkies and real-time strategy fans are encouraged to get evil in this tongue-and-cheek spy game. Evident in its outrageously wicked mission objectives, its management-based playing style, and its dry sense of humor, Evil Genius presents a real-time challenge of the same ilk found in the popular Dungeon Keeper games -- not surprisingly, perhaps, since developer Elixir Studios was founded by former Bullfrog designer Demis Hassabis. The game also incorporates a more abstract "World Domination" mode, with elements reminiscent of Elixir's innovative political sim, Republic: The Revolution. In Evil Genius, players take the title role and face a series of scenarios that challenge them to live up to it. As a criminal mastermind bent on ruling the planet, the player must succeed in multiple, interrelated endeavors. <br><br>First, a secret base of operations must be established, so that minions can be properly trained and new technologies can be safely researched. Players take control of the layout and furnishing of an underground lair, hidden on a remote island. The truly cosmopolitan villain also requires a certain degree of infamy, so the up-and-coming global scoundrel must complete dangerous missions to build notoriety. Once the whole world has learned of his dastardly existence, governments will send their heavily armed commandos and secret agent show-offs to bring the Evil Genius to justice; players must also be prepared with the tricks, traps, and bloodthirsty henchmen it will take to fend off these intruders in real-time play.

Great idea for a game, but a lot of down time.
Evil Genius is a great idea for a game. You take on the role of a nemesis from classic spy films like the James Bond franchise. In your goal for world domination, you recruit henchmen and minions to do your evil bidding, and build the super fortress on a tropical island. Hopefully you can avoid the spy agencies from around the world who will try to stop you. Even seven years later (this review was written in 2011), the idea for the game, as well as its humor and music hold up great. The graphics are stylized, and still look good but simple, and most modern computers can handle the game without any issues. The best part of the game is designing your base. There are a ton of rooms to choose from, and the layout of your base really does effect how well your minions work and recover, or ... Evil Genius is a great idea for a game. It has some similarities to other sims games, and it seems there was another game called Dungeon Master that was the main inspiration for Evil Genius. However, I suspect what frustrates me the most would have been frustrating to players in 2004. The game has a lot of downtime. Minions have to be trained to reach higher levels, and building new rooms in your base take time before they are ready to be used. Later on, to use the advanced items and rooms, research is required before they items are available. All of this makes sense, and fits the time frame in the game, but leaves the player with little to do at times. Usually I play the game with the TV on, and only have to play during the commercials. There are ways to speed up the events above, as well as cheats codes or mods that help, but I found the best trick was to play until about half way through, learn what I did wrong, and then start again. Sites that offer the mods are a great resource too for other information about the game, which isn't presented in the tutorial or help menu. From the sites I've learned that the game designers are out of business, so this is probably as good as the game will get. Remember, the game came out in 2004, and you're probably going to pay $8-$10 for it. It's still worth a few hours of your time. You'll easily get your money's worth from it, but once you finish the game, you won't play it much again.

Only game of its kind, and it was cut down in its prime. There are a million and one games about bond, or being the "Hero" .. but where's the love for the bad guys? Why are they simply relegated to the footnotes of history, why not tell their story? Well this game does! You start out on a humble island, with a small money vault.. Before you stands a mountain, Maybe it would make a good lair? The combinations are endless! Set up your evil lair to suit your personalities, lay traps, build torture devices.. And Rule the world from the comfort of your arm chair!Only game of its kind, and it was cut down in its prime. Evil Genius (PC Games, 2004)
Great James Bond type play. Characters are a bit cartoonish, but appropriate for this game. Awesome music. Simple, but challanging play. Can build hideaways, move and escape. Did I say that the music is great? Like your own James Bond movie.
