Product Information

Between the height of the French Indochina War in the fifties and the fall of Phnom Penh and Saigon in 1975, 135 photographers from all sides of the conflict are recorded as missing or having been killed. This book is a memorial to those men and women, and in many cases it includes the last photographs they took.      Horst Faas and Tim Page, two photographers who worked and were wounded in Vietnam, have gathered many thousands of pictures by those who were killed. Their search has taken them through the archives in Hanoi as well as those of Western agencies. In some cases families have generously provided access to private files where unknown bodies of work have lain unseen for more than forty years.      The list of the dead includes some of the greatest photographers of the century, such as Robert Capa and Larry Burrows, and some who had been working in Vietnam for only a matter of days before their deaths. A number of the Cambodian photographers working for the Western press were executed. Other photographers, like Sean Flynn and Dana Stone, disappeared. Their loss inspired Tim Page to begin this memorial.      The resulting sequence of photographs follows the course of the war and the transformation of the serene landscapes of Cambodia and Vietnam into scenes of nightmarish devastation. At the moments of intense battle one is reminded not only of the courage of the photographers but of the compassion amid the brutality of war. These photographers were intimate with war to a degree that may well be denied future generations. That intimacy led to their deaths. Their photographs are their legacy.

  • Profound--Thought Provoking--Moving

I bought this book first and foremost because of my interest in photography and the subject matter. I did not have the opportunity to serve in Vietnam in the '60s but one of my high school classmates did, as a conflict photo-journalist. In many ways I wish I had thought to follow his path. The images in this book are both powerful and haunting--powerful enough to stand on their own, haunting because you are aware none of these young non combatant photographers survived their assignments. There is really nothing to dislike about this book other than the first edition being relatively limited and there being no second. It is a beautiful publication, thoughtfully and tastefully edited by Horst Faas, a Pulitzer Prize winning war photographer and AP's chief photographer and photo editor for ...

  • Very moving photographic exhibit

We saw this exhibition at the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City in January. It was very moving and we wanted to be able to spend more time, but were on a tour, so we decided to buy the book that went with it. Of course, it is out-of-print, so we found it on eBay and it came quickly and in excellent condition.

  • Stunningly good

I have been waiting to get this book at a reasonable price for 9 years. I first saw it in the War Remnants Museum in HCMC, but as I was travelling light couldn't purchase it. Upon returning home I discovered it had been required reading at some US universities and was extortionately expensive. I once also saw it for a reasonable price in a second hand bookshop in Lewes, Sussex, but the shop was closed and when I returned it had gone. This is quite simply a stunning book. Like the photographs it's beautiful and haunting. The words written by journalists that covered these conflicts that accompany the stunning photography add in every way to what we are seeing. This is not just a book, it is an homage by friends and colleagues to the bravery of those that paid the ultimate price to ...

  • Moving and outstanding

This pictorial book replete with narrative provides the valiant history and bravery of conflict photographers. Not to disparage videographers, but there is something so gripping and pausing about photography stills. Frozen in place, the facial expressions of emotions are set in human history forever. To see the photographers who rode, ran and walked into combat areas armed only with a string of cameras, their guile and steady hands where I and others went armed with firearms. This certainly is a remembrance many home libraries should consider having a copy of in the collection.
