In this authentic, entertaining, and tragic film, Bette Midler plays Rose, a talented but exhausted, alcoholic rock star whose entire life is controlled by her cutthroat manager, Rudge (Alan Bates). Taking a bleak look at the downside of the music industry, THE ROSE chronicles the precipitous fall of this fictional rock & roll diva (modeled after Janis Joplin) as she nears a concert date in her home town that she hasn't been to in years. Pulled down by raging alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as her own insecurities, Rose's life begins to deteriorate to the point of complete self-destruction, all the while begging Rudge for a break in her grueling tour schedule. This raw, uncompromising, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking film includes several incredible musical performances by Midler in actual concert settings. THE ROSE is Midler's first role as an actress, and she embodies the alternately frenetic, worn-out, enraged, and sweetly insecure star with an almost inconceivable power, especially when interacting with her love, the faithfully adoring Dyer (Frederic Forrest).

Bette is bada$$ rock and roll realness
One of my favorite performances of Bette Midler. The music can stand on its own. Great soundtrack,amazing performances and man,does it get you in the feels. Grab some tissues..you will need them. You will laugh,cry and be ready to watch over and over.

Rock 'n' Roll fable
It's easy to see that the story is drawn from the life of Janis Joplin. Bette Midler was a great choice to play the title role, capturing the free spirit and wild life the that Rose chose over conventional family life. Her struggle to decide between the two comes across with authenticity due to Midler's portrayal and a reality-based script. The movie has true dramatic value, without becoming melodramatic.It's easy to see that the story is drawn from the life of Janis Joplin. Multi-talented, the Divine Miss M is a MONSTER in this role! This was her very first starring role in a major motion picture…and what a stellar performance. At the time of release, it was rumored to be a bio-pic of Janis Joplin’s tumultuous life and career. However close the comparison, it was more of a composite of how artists of the day, became slaves to the BUSINESS of the music industry – leading to their demise by naïve exploitation or their own hand. Great movie of a great artist.
Did not believe we had this movie so we got the DVD and found out we had the VHS tape of it. Still the DVD will be nice to have and will play better.
