The small ship making the Liverpool-to-New York trip in the early months of 1856 carried mail, crates of dry goods, and more than one hundred passengers, mostly Irish emigrants. Suddenly an iceberg tore the ship asunder and five lifeboats were lowered. Tense & fascinating, well written, hard to put down
This is a very detailed, well researched, well written book. The only time I get to read is at night before bed, and each night, I had a difficult time putting it down, it was that compelling. And then a difficult time shutting the images out of my mind. It's a stressful, nerve wracking story, and very heartbreaking, but the detailed history of mid-19th century ocean travel, for crew and passengers alike, is fascinating. Descriptions of the thick lethal ice and terrible weather conditions encountered by the ship on its fateful voyage, and then the struggle of the few survivors in their inadequate lifeboat in the stormy seas make this book impossible to put down. The story is wrapped up well with information about what happened to the major characters, so you are not left wondering. ... This is a very detailed, well researched, well written book. Fascinating read! I couldn’t put it down!
This true story took place around the time my Irish ancestor came to the States. It’s helped me learn more about what his journey was like.
