I love the first segment of this movie. The first segment took place in 1960's. It described how 2 elderly women live and love each other for many years and suddenly, one of them dies of stroke, the other one is only being recognized as the best friend, not family member. Vanessa Redgrave was marvelous in this role. She could only moan for her lost partner in dark and hide all the sorrow to herself. The scene that she felt the need to separate her stuff apart from her partner's right before her partner's nephew arrival certainly reflects how lesbians are practically nonexistent at that time. It is so sad and upsetting that some distant relatives could just walk in there and take away everything (furnitures, bird collections with all sentimental meanings) she had shared with ... A friend of mine recommeded this movie highly and it has proven to be one of the best movies I have ever seen! I bought a copy for myself and am looking to buy several more for friends and family. At different times throughout the movie, I found myself either laughing or crying. The stories of these women is both heart warming and heart breaking. The one, most clearest thing I got from this movie is that we are all human beings with the same hopes and dreams as everyone else and that no one has the right to judge us. I applaud all the actresses who played parts in this movie as they did a fantastic job portraying the women whose roles they played. I loved every story but the one that I most loved were the characters played by Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone. In the end, I laughed and ... I Recommend this DVD
I'd been seeing this DVD for a while at the Movie Stop but wasn't willing to pay full price for it. The first time it was marked down, I took a chance on it. It was well worth full price. It's actually three short movies and all three are really good stories; set in the same house at different eras. I won't go into much detail and ruin the stories, so here's a brief synopsis of each. The first story details two "old maids" who have secretly lived their lives as lovers in the 60s. The second story is about a group of college feminist lesbians who aren't as open-minded as they think; set in the early 80s. The last movie is about two lesbian lovers (Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone) who are trying to become parents, set in the early 2000s. There are ... In my opinion, this is the best of the entire "If These Walls Could Talk" HBO series with the best segment being the one with Vanessa Redgrave. It should be required viewing for anyone who has any doubts at to whether gay couples are entitled to the same rights of survivorship that heterosexual couples have and often take for granted. Very poignant and gut-wrenching. Vanessa Redgrave once again shows that she is truly one of the greatest actresses of our time. Loved it. If part 3 ever comes out I would get it. Good for newby's.
I bought this so my new girlfriend could see Ellen in a fem movie. This is also a good movie for bi courious women to ease them into a comfortable place. It worked for me that way. This has 3 or 4 short flicks about different circumstances that lesbian women find themselves in. Its very well made, and with great actresses. Loved it.
