TRUSTWORTHY L GLASS ALTERNATIVE Worth every penny. No regrets!!
I am a professional photographer with over 25 years experience starting with Canon's A1 35 mm film camera. I dove head first into the digital world with the Canon 5D Mark 2,580EX speedlight flash, and after also purchasing a SONY HVRZ1U pro grade camcorder for wedding videography, I had very little $$$$ left for Canon Luxury glass. The camera shop loved me,but there was no wiggle room for price breaks. With the remaining money, the shop owner suggested Tamron's 28-75 as she uses it for portraits and weddings. She OWNS the store and could "demo" any lens of choice !!! I trusted her and the return policy. I went out and put this lens through the ringer of "test" shots. Everything from people, animal portraits,landscape, architecture, every level of light from dusk to dawn, sunny to ... Everything from people, animal portraits,landscape, architecture, every level of light from dusk to dawn, sunny to overcast,night sky/star gazing, LIGHT PAINTING technique, MACRO as this is a macro lens, handheld and tripod use ( this is NOT an Image Stabilized version) which is now available. Needless to say I was impressed once I got used to the limited focal points of the 5D2. I was blaming it on the lens; being used to full time manual focus and now the camera "does it for you". I found parts of the image were blurry or soft while the rest was tack sharp. I am an admitted pixel peeper. I use Photoshop and if I can blow up to 200 or 300% and not see pixelization or minimal at best, then I am happy with the shot. YES, I know that all programs magnify differently;some worse than others, which is why I only use Photoshop's magnifier for testing. Also, I shoot in Canon's best jpeg setting not RAW. If it looks that good with ANY JPEG compression, then its bound to be as good if not better in RAW. I just don't have time to convert the number of photos I take per event into final product. You need to know your camera ( I simultaneously learned all my gear), for best results. My copy of this lens is incredibly sharp even compared to my newest lens..the Canon 24-105mm f4L. Yes, I initially found it a bit soft at 2.8 but once I manually set the focus point to dead center, it did get sharper overall. No softness in zoom range until 75mm;stepping down to f4 solved that issue. I was shooting mainly outdoors so light wasn't an issue, but for indoors you can always increase ISO. My 5D2 shoots very noise free up to 1000 with this lens before you get any appreciable "grain" (digital noise). However you do get slow autofocus and "hunting" in low light or night conditions. The camera won't fire or is out of focus if it does. I switch to manual mode, focus in live view, and then take the shot. Again, know your camera and proper techniques for each situation. PROS: f2.8 =great in low light, VERY SHARP, great color reproduction, lightweight, macro, smooth auto and manual focus, no barrel slip. CONS: louder focus motor noise (but acceptable in all but church quiet settings), hunts badly in autofocus in low light conditions causing loss of those "one time only" shots. Not weather sealed so be careful in dusty or inclimate weather conditions OVERALL CONCLUSION: BEST LENS for the price and benefit ratio. Quality lens with very little chromatic aberration or lens flare; great low light performer. NO I.S. but neither does the Canon L equivalent. Great overall sharpness makes this lens worth carrying versus a bunch of primes to do the same job. For the money, you can't beat the Tamron 28-75mm.
I've been shooting for a long time now and if I've learned one thing at all, it's that you have to have fast lenses. What do I mean by "fast?" When you hear the term, "fast" lens, it refers to the maximum aperture number, always referenced by the "F" number on the lens. The smaller the number, the faster the lens. Meaning, the amount of light that the lens can allow into the camera at a certain time interval. For example, at F2.8, lens will let double the amount of light in versus a lens set at F4, in the same amount of time. So, when buying lens, you want to try to get the "fastest" lens you can afford. You will quickly see that the faster the lens, the more expensive and heavier the lens. Canon makes a awesome 24-70mm F2.8L lens and before that, they had a 28-70mm F2.8L lens. The ... Well, I can't afford "L" lens, but I wanted a fast short range zoom for my Canon 1D series camera. I have the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 for my Canon 40D, but that's a "digital only" lens and won't work on my Canon 1D. I love the Tamron 17-50mm, so I took a closer look at it's bigger sister lens, the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8. I scoured the internets for reviews on the lens and all came back with good reviews. ...Some reviews claimed that it could compete with Canon's 24-70mm F2.8L and if you consider the price difference, it could beat it. So, I saw a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 on eBay. It had a very nice "Buy It Now" price, so I snatched it up. Here's my pros and cons; PRO: High Value, Excellent Image Quality, Decent build, Fast (2.8), Lighter than Canon's. CON: AF motor is a bit loud and is not as fast as Canon's USM focusing motors, not weather proof like Canon's 24-70mm, Resale value compared to Canon L lenses. As you can see, my CONs are bases on comparing it to Canon's L lenses, but when you consider that the Tamron is one third the price of the Canon 24-70mm, the CONs are acceptable. If you need a fast short range zoom, consider the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8, if you can't go large for the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L or Canon 28-70mm F2.8L. It's a great value and the image quality is great. Great product for those looking for a lens for some diversity
While I have not had the opportunity to test the limits of this lens, I find a great value and all around great use.

GREAT FAST OVERALL LENS
Tamron is one of these companies that spend very little money on advertising and put all their efforts into making quality products. What's mean to you. You get to save money and get excellent products. I have used this lens for over 6 years and about 90% of the time it was the lens on my camera. It has never failed me. Those who may give this lens a low rating are the ones who don't know how to use their camera. I had the chance to compare my lens with a canon version of the same caliber. And there was very little difference. I tested full zoom in low light, to wide angle in bright light and there was very little difference. In fact the Tamron was better in some cases. The Canon lens was heavier but had a faster motor. The canon also cost 3 times as much. Pros - Price, quality, ... A Good Lens, Don't Expect Miracles
