A great game robbed of perfection by some obnoxious bugs. 4.5 out of 5
I really like this game. Graphics are pretty good, sounds are decent, and the combat music soundtrack is great. Gameplay-wise, the tactical combat is very thought-provoking. You really have to pay attention and make smart choices to win. In games like Starcraft or Command and Conquer, you can make all the soldiers you want - if they die, big deal. In XCOM however, your soldiers gain abilities and better stats as they level up, and it becomes absolutely critical to keep your best people alive and well-equipped. Making stupid decisions that get your best soldiers killed will make victory nearly impossible. There is no revive chamber for the deceased - just a memorial wall. In comparison with the old XCOM, I think Firaxis did a great job of keeping the series true to its roots, but cleaned ... I really like this game. The old XCOM was absolutely brutal in terms of difficulty. This game is more forgiving - or more accurately, gives the user more control over the difficult of the game. For hardcore XCOM fans, you can play on Impossible Mode with Ironman enabled (Ironman mode does not permit multiple saves and continuously autosaves your game forcibly - no do-overs allowed!). My biggest gripe isn't really with any of the core game aspects. The biggest problem with the game is that it is, to be blunt, buggy. I've had problems with the grapple hook flinging my guys all the way across the map. The game camera will sometimes behave oddly, darting off into nowhere-land. The enemy turn will sometimes cause a lock-up, and you will need to reset the game to continue. There are also problems where enemies (and your own people, to be fair) can miraculously shoot through solid objects, which rationally would appear to obstruct their line-of-sight to the target. This sometimes leads to lucky kills, or unlucky dead squad mates. *some spoilers here below* While difficulty and challenge are healthy aspects of a good game, I think the game does not "transition" its difficulty well. To be honest, the game is rather simple and easy until the alien base mission where you must fight the Sectoid Commander. This mission is brutal, and afterwards, the kid gloves come off. The game suddenly becomes much more difficult. I like some of the artistic changes they made. In the old XCOM, the Mutons look somewhat like the Neo-Sapiens from the old cartoon show Exo-Squad. Basically, muscular purple humanoids. However, now the Mutons are large, burly, gorilla-esque monstrosities. They are very convincing and plausible as alien shock troops. I think the game designers lacked creativity in the dissections and interrogation scenes. They could have injected some good humor (or interesting back story) into these scenes with a little more effort.

Overall I give this gave a 4/5 score. "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" is a turn based game where you are fighting off an invading alien force. There are multiple variables the player must balance; prioritizing technology upgrades, base construction, and troop development are some of these variables that impact the overall success. There are different levels of difficulty available giving the user the option to save constantly. Then there is an "Iron Man" mode, where the game prevents any chance of a "do over". This makes each and every decision more difficult and important. The game can either be more or less paced depending on how daring, or risky the player wants to play. When a new recruit gets promoted, after one or two missions, they automatically are assigned a soldier class (assault, sniper, support, or heavy). This can make your soldier options very unbalanced. I have heard of some people ending up with 5 snipers. I don't think it would be too much to ask for the option to choose who becomes what. My second complaint, which is more like an annoyance, is the ability for the soldiers and aliens to shoot through structures. If anything I would thing the soldier/alien should first move to a position to fire first then go back where they were hiding. I also wish they would have made the maps a little more 'accurate' to reflect the actual location. For example, if your troops touch down in China show Chinese style buildings. All in all, the game is really challenging and fun to play and is well worth the purchase.

Great Game Worth A Buy!!!!
Great game mechanics wise it is very smooth. This is deffinately worth a buy due to the playability of the game and the depth which it has to it. When you first start playing you think to yourself this is to easy well after about 4 levels the aliens jump in difficulty and every map that you play has a different layout. If you like the old X-Com games you will surely like this one since it plays pretty closely to its older counterpart. The story to the game really gets to you do to the fact that you can customize the team you take out and can rename them to family and friends. Also the customization allows you to change their face and you spend points for each level in a tree for whatever type of soldier they are. Turn based strategy
Xcom is a pretty great strategy game. I usually don't like turn based games but I really like this one. I could nitpick over some small issues but I won't. I've never play any of the old xcom games but this one is certainly something strategy fans should check out.

Great game, really fun, good replay value.
I really like this game. It is not a FPS as one might think but rather an intense strategy game that really makes the player think before they act. Compared to other games such as the Call of Duty and Halo series this is a definite change of pace while still within the battle-type genre. Additionally, the game randomizes how it operates each time you play so a replay will not be stale like many other games with specific missions and levels. Though a real challenge for someone new to the third person style, it has a fairly quick learning curve and you can enjoy it right away. I highly recommend this game to everyone looking for something a bit different from a FPS that still maintains battle-type situations.I really like this game.
