Synopsis
Thousands of people live in the subway, railroad, and sewage tunnels that form the bowels of New York City and this book is about them, the so-called mole people. They live alone and in communities, in subway tunnels and below subway platforms and this fascinating study presents how and why people move underground, who they are, and what they have to say about their lives and the "topside" world they've left behind.

For those interested in anthropology, sociology and what can happen when people fall through the cracks of society, this is a gem, Grad student author enters the unseen world of the mole people,People who have taken up residence in the subway tunnels and sewers of New York, Stories are consistent yet detached,An interesting read for anyone interested in offbeat literature, What is lacking in proper format is strengthened by vibrant stories and the readers imagination,Author views societal groups and tribal bands through the eyes of a sociologist, yet lets the reader fill in the blanks, Recommended,Not for kids,

  • Interesting topic, lots to learn but hard read

This was a good book and maybe if you're into what life is like in the underground tunnels of New York, you'd really love it. I enjoyed the parts that described what the tunnels were like and I liked a few of the personal stories but after a while, it all became the same. I had a hard time relating to the people, not because I haven't experienced it but because she describes the people in a non chalant way. The book kind of jumps around which made it hard for me to follow. I was not impressed but it was interesting to know that this really does happen and what these people go through on a daily basis.

  • Eye-opening

Toth did not just take the role of back-seat observer. For the purposes of making a complete book, she dived right into the world of the underground and put herself in serious risk as to write the most representative picture of these people's lives. She gives the reader insight to a world that is so important and so significant, yet completely underrepresented and swept under the rug. Any one who is living in a city, or anyone interested in sociology, psychology or philosophy, MUST read this book.
