Product Information

Good news! Fannie's back in town--and the town is among the leading characters in her new novel. Along with Neighbor Dorothy, the lady with the smile in her voice, whose daily radio broadcasts keep us delightfully informed on all the local news, we also meet Bobby, her ten-year-old son, destined to live a thousand lives, most of them in his imagination; Norma and Macky Warren and their ninety-eight-year-old Aunt Elner; the oddly sexy and charismatic Hamm Sparks, who starts off in life as a tractor salesman and ends up selling himself to the whole state and almost the entire country; and the two women who love him as differently as night and day. Then there is Tot Whooten, the beautician whose luck is as bad as her hairdressing skills; Beatrice Woods, the Little Blind Songbird; Cecil Figgs, the Funeral King; and the fabulous Minnie Oatman, lead vocalist of the Oatman Family Gospel Singers. The time is 1946 until the present. The town is Elmwood Springs, Missouri, right in the middle of the country, in the midst of the mostly joyous transition from war to peace, aiming toward a dizzyingly bright future. Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human characters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to quote Time, "utterly irresistible."

  • For me the title was the hook, and it is explained in the story.

Fannie Flag is one of my favorite writers and in this book she spans the decades with a small rural town and brings her characters to light with humor and compassion and you feel like one of the neighbors too. This is feel good reading without being sappy.

  • An absolutely hilarious, sweet, and poignant story.

Fannie Flagg is the supreme author of small-town America. She is able to accurately capture the very essence of what life was like in the 50's, and carry it through to modern times. Her characters are vibrant and real, and I became very attached to each of them - I didn't want the story to end! I laughed myself silly all the way through, and also shed an occasional tear. After reading this book, I would definitely read anything by Fannie Flagg.

  • One of the BEST books I've ever read!

This book is so entertaining that you can't put it down! It takes us back to an earlier time when life was less complicated and people more loving. Children were allowed to be children. It was so descriptive that you could actually picture yourself sitting down in the living room tuning in to Neighbor Dorothy. Even though the novel is very long..you never wanted it to end. That says alot! Bravo to Fannie Flagg for her super real characters that you grow to love. It would make the ultimate movie! All of Fannie's books should be made into movies. We need more "feel good" books and movies! I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone.

  • One of my favorite books.

Maybe it is because of my age (70's) and from a small town but I love this book. It is a trip down memory lane in the best way.

  • Great book

Really good book, in her Elmwood Springs series of books. I feel like all the characters in that series are family .
