Awesome Phone, as long as you're not far from an outlet
This phone works great. Never had a problem with it. Almost never freezes or gives me any problems. My biggest complaint is that its battery life is pathetic. I even bought an extended 2800mAh battery, which requires a special battery door that has a big squar lump in the back that increases the phone's already considerable size. But even if I make no calls or use it at all, it won't even last 8 hours without needing a charge. With the standard battery, it doesn't even last 5 hours. I have to keep rechargers handy wherever I go. At home, at the office, in the car... everywhere! My only other complaint is the camera is pretty lame, even by cell phone standards. Keyboard is good sized and easy to use, and I have big hands. I've used it as an MP3 player, and it does pretty good ... This phone works great. Never had a problem with it. Older workhorse, but still good.
I have two of these; I bought the second one in case the first one stops working. It's a Palm. It runs the Palm OS. It is a better sounding phone than other Palm models. The Internet is slow, but it's there. It has a touch screen. They have a tendency to freeze up, especially after just being charged; if not for that I would have rated it Excellent. I have a Nokia E61 Smartphone, and a BlackBerry 8830. The Blackberry is actually a bit better, has never frozen up on me, but it has no touch screen, and I can't use it on RIM's servers because the PIN is locked. It is a better phone, and if you can use RIM's servers, it's great. But being on Verizon with EVDO this is almost as good. You get a signal, even in fringe areas where other phones fail. The menus are easy and intuitive. The camera could be better, if that's important, look elsewhere. But I buy a phone to use it primarily as a phone, and this does the job better than a lotof others. EMail work with any provider, and setting it up is a snap. Good selection of apps, and since it older the apps are well weathered; the down side being people are focusing less on new apps for the Palm OS. But you can find anything you want to run on it. The biggest drawback is no WiFi.

Useful palm phone
I'm hooked on Palm PDAs. So I saw the Centro as a chance to get rid of the PDA and do both on the cell phone. The screen is very small, and the power port is a weak link. When I got my old Centro from Verizon, it wasn't necessary to have a data plan for texting. After about two years of pocket wear and knocking around, the charging port became fragile, meaning that I had to sit and hold the plug "just right" so it would charge for around 1.5 hr/day. That situation didn't last too long. First I went to Verizon (VZ); they wanted to renew my contract for two years and give me some other phone. No, I want my centro, but I want it to charge up. Then they wanted to sell me a battery $40+tax+shipping ($8 for two on eBay+0tax+0shipping). But the battery didn't solve the problem, so I decided to ... I'm hooked on Palm PDAs. The keyboard is "tactile" to your fingernails--'way too small for your fingers. The coating of the keys is so shiny that it's hard to find the special characters like + / * $ ! . So touch typing is definitely out. Pros: it's a Palm PDA!!!, it's light, it's loud enough, it works well with bluetooth. Can send&receive pictures and text while talking on the phone! Good touchscreen dialing pad. Good tech support from VZ & Palm. Cons: Verizon stores are the pits--keep away! Battery drain is significant; must charge daily, especially in weak signal areas. Shiny key coverings. Small screen. Poor design of charging port. Low-res camera. My Palm PDA isn't lost. When my cell phone days are over, my trusty T|X is standing by to keep me organized.

My wife was interested in getting a smartphone with Verizon for just syncing calendars, etc. Verizon requires an extra $30 per month data plan on any smartphone made after Nov 2008. This phone and a few others (see http://corusa.com/blog/2009/07/05/verizon-wireless-forced-data/) don't require data plans but sync with windows and OSX (my OS of choice) with 'The Missing Sync' app. The phone has a small keyboard, so not good if you are a heavy texter, but the apps on it work fine, either via a stylus or using your finger. If you have large fingers, I wouldn't recommend it. Before you buy a phone aftermarket like this, make sure the seller guarantees it will activate on the Verizon network, by asking the seller for the ESN and then calling Verizon about it before you buy it. I got this phone right when it came out, I like getting them when they first cokme out on first software upgrade, and seeing how the phone behaves. Well I don't know if anyone else had this problem, but mine would always have a spot different areas each time, next to messages logo that wouldnt respond to start. That happened like 6 months after I got this phone, and it wasn't that much of a problem, because, there's a cursor pad. Used that until the phone behaved as the 700P did when you go out of the messages or when the V (check) appears then the phone will freeze, battery removals. Supposed to be better then the 700p, which i had only 1 problem with. The msg freezing. I wonder if this is a downgrade or upgrade. it has a trackpad (upgrade) but the freezing is either the same, or a ... This phone lasted a total of 8 months and worked ok except for the lagging and freezing. This phone ended up getting wet, and I got an insurance replacememnt to see if the features were different, or if I got a phone that was fluky. So I used this phone until it had the same issues with the touchscreen but was every other time I used it, so I kept in wait for my contract to go up. Theres a button on the side thats supposed to go to your camera, but it locked the phone somehow and the qwerty couldn't function. Ended up upgrading to a different phone (BB 8830) and I was glad I did. However the trackball went out on that, and I decided, I'm going to stay with simple feature phones.
