À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Recent outbreaks of disease in domestic animals, humans and wildlife illustrate the relative importance of infectious diseases and the vulnerability of susceptible animals. Why do such diseases emerge? What are the factors that lead to dramatic epidemics? How can we apply our knowledge to improve the methods of control? These are just some of the questions addressed in this book, which seeks to develop and apply an ecological approach to an understanding ofepidemiology in wild animal populations. The development of mathematical models in the dynamics of infectious diseases is a field that has seen rapid growth over the last decade. Thereis now a need to challenge these models with the data and to bring vets and field workers closer to the disease issues. This book was conceived to identify the exciting questions and set the future research agenda. 50 of the most active workers met in Trento, northern Italy, to brainstorm the issues, and from this the editors have moulded a synthesis that captures the excitement and importance of this expanding field.

Reviews
... the book is the next step towards a general textbook on the ecology of wildlife diseases and will be a measure for any future issue., With a huge number (51) of world-class contributors, this book covers its various topics in great depth and is divided across nine very detailed and well-written chapters., ... the book illuminates exciting problems from the ecological as well as from the epidemiological perspective ... it will be an informative textbook for readers working with wildlife diseases and an inspiring read for biologically interested readers., "Largely the results of a meeting of 50 scientists in Trento, Italy (the date of the meeting is not specified), this work is meant to move towards an ecological approach to the epidemiology of wild animals. Chapters cover parasite and host population dynamics, parasite community ecology and biodiversity, microparasite transmission and persistence, spatial aspects of disease dynamics, the ecology of tick-borne infections in wildlife preserves, the role of pathogens in biological conservation, and visions for future research."--SciTech Book News
