Comprehensive instructions for raising chickens for eggs or meat.
This is the first edition, published in 1995, of Gail Damerow's Guide To Raising Chickens. I prefer it to the second edition which was updated and published in 2010. In this book you will find lots of comprehensive instructions for raising chickens from eggs, or newly hatched chicks (both available by mail) or a flock with rooster(s) and chickens who breed. Damerow includes instructions for incubating, providing heat and enclosures, feeding, housing, and avoiding problems for your chickens. She also lists poultry health problems, parasites, diseases, behavior problems, and remedies. Damerow includes instructions for caponizing a rooster, but mentions that this is illegal in most states for anyone but a licensed veterinarian to perform. Storey's Guide to raising chickens.
This is an excellent book and is my second copy. I loaned the first to a friend and needed to start another flock. It gives detailed information on breeds to select for your area, breeds for laying egss, meat, etc. We were complete "flatlanders", ie novice chicken farmers and this book helped us create a henhouse and a flock of chickens that gave us 2 dozen eggs a day. Our small family only needs a few eggs, so our friends and neighbors love us! Even children notice the difference between store bought eggs and natural free range eggs. PLUS you do not need a rooster, so city dwellers can keep a few girls in the garden and presto....no bugs and fresh eggs every day!This is an excellent book and is my second copy. Serious about chickens Get the best book available here
Gail Damerow has worked with her chickens so long that reading the book sounds like you are hearing directly from the chickens themselves. We read this book several times from the library; and decided we really need "Raising Chickens" as part of our permanent library. Granted, we are beginners. But following the counsel this book provides enabled us to successfully raise our first chicks. We enjoy eggs from them almost every day; and believe me, you never tasted GOOD eggs until you have them still ward from the bird. Get the book - raise some chicks yourself - you'll be very, very glad you did. Great, informative book
I really like how this book is written for beginners. It covers a broad range of avenues and is very comprehensive. It is easy to read and understand. I bought it after I got my chickens, because I felt I needed a little help. The poultry store I got my chickens from gave it high remarks, so I bought this book. I wish I would have bought it before I got my chickens! As with about all books, there are some ideas I have not used; but, over all, I have injoyed reading it and applying what I have learned.I really like how this book is written for beginners. Read the fun stuff then read this before bringing chicks home.
Delves deep into everything you need to know about raising chickens. I love that it is not vague or too technical. Educational and understandable.
