Created in response to a requirement issued by the flamboyant owner of TWA, Howard Hughes, in late 1939, the Constellation was soon ordered by other airlines due to its unmatched ability to fly non-stop from the East Coast to the West Coast at a constant 300 miles per hour. All the major prototype, pre-production, and civil service variants are shown in production ar the Lockheed plant in California, and in service with various operators around the globe. Period color photography is also included, featuring Lockheed and airline advertisements. Detailed captions and a concise narrative outline the manufacturing procedures, while appendices includes comprehensive production batch lists, performance data, and a double-page cutaway.

Well-written history of the evolutionary design, development and service history of the iconic Lockheed airliner and military airplane. Well-illustrated. Good description of the many military models used by the Navy, Air Force and Army up through the 1970's. An interesting chapter ("Accidents and Incidents") covers several unusual or remarkable stories involving civilian and military Constellations. This reader is puzzled, however, by the authors' omission of any mention of the 1969 downing of a U.S. Navy EC-121 Super Constellation over the Sea of Japan by North Korean MiGs, killing all 34 members of its crew. This remains one of the most significant international incidents involving the design and any history of the type falls short of being comprehensive without it. A good read and ... This book will add to my extensive collection and hopefully my children will also get some idea of what I did before they came along. AAAAA Excellent transaction in every way. This book has lots of great photos of the most beautiful airliner ever built. All the legendary airlines that flew her, the luxurious interior, and all the vital stats. It describes in great detail how it evolved from a military aircraft into a luxury liner for the flying public. Beautiful color photos along with lots of B&W.
