Product Information

Just like today, with high-specification computers being used to design even higher specification models for the next generation, the making of machines to make machines was one of the most important aspects of the Industrial Revolution. The lathe, for example, is the oldest known machine tool and dates back to antiquity, but it wasn't until the late 17th century that such industries as clock making, the building of scientific instruments, furniture and gun makers, began to convert from woodworking lathes to ones that ware capable of machining metal. Craftsmen needed precise machines that could shape metal gears, cut metal screws and stamp shapes out of metal, thus enabling others to assemble their products. It was the advent of these precision machine tools of the late 18th and early 19th century, that enabled craftsmen to progress their skills, to pave the way forward in the construction of the steam engine. With the advent of the steam engine came other machines that facilitated increased production of all sorts of manufacturing goods. But one of the most important and daring inventions that came out of this era was the mighty locomotive. The birth of the locomotive brought freedom to travel further and goods could be transported more easily, quicker and along vast distances. The pace at which the steam locomotive developed in those far off days was phenomenal. We have come a long way since Richard Trevithick built his first practical steam locomotive, which ran at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England in 1803. Today we have locomotives that can travel at over 300 kph, transporting people in a relaxing and pleasant environment. But it is still possible to relive the days of early steam, to see some of those amazing engines and even to ride those early locomotives. Thankfully, museums are dedicated to the history of the steam engine, with conservation and restoration being carried out every minute of the day in some part of the world.     I prefer "A Comprehensive Encyclopedia etc.", see below

    An excellent book, especially in view of its modest price. The photos are well presented, varied, and show many engines I have never heard of or seen before. As a "Complete Encyclopedia .....", I felt it skipped over some of the more "common" steam types, perhaps assuming that we are more familiar with these and they do not need to be shown. Perhaps this is a correct assumption, but it is this fact alone which prompts my suggested title change. The book is a great broad view, but not a complete view. My complements to the author on a very worthwhile volumn.
