In the late 1960s, a group of burnt out teenagers from broken homes ambled together and began to surf along Venice, California's Pacific Ocean Park pier, a ghostly shell of a former amusement park nicknamed "Dogtown." United by their attention to style and willingness to take risks, this group of unruly boys were handpicked and nurtured by maverick surfboard designer Jeff Ho, who christened them the Zephyr surf team (or Z-boys). Originally taking up skateboarding as a distraction for the non-surfing hours, the team ended up revolutionizing what was to become an internationally popular sport, using emptied out pools to create a surf-inspired style that was fluid and vertical and ultimately made them legends.In this fine, frenetic documentary, director Stacy Peralta (one of the most famous Z-boys) tells the inspiring story of himself and his team. Through interviews, archival film footage, and stunningly beautiful still photographs taken by the Z-boys photographers Craig Stecyk and Glen E. Friedman, Peralta delves into both the large and small of the story--from the personal details of skaters' lives to their lasting impact upon a sport that became a culture. The soundtrack--an expertly chosen mix of classic punk rock and heavy metal including The Stooges, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper--is the perfect aural complement to this story, reflecting the rebellious attitude that fueled the boys.

Dogtown and Z-Boys then walks through the history of Dogtown, talking about the surfers in the area and how rough and poor the locals were. The documentary explains how in 1972 a surf shop was opened in Dogtown called Jeff Ho and Zephyr Surfboards. It would be the surf team from this shop that would transition its aggressive surfing style to skateboarding, and change things forever. For more details on the history of Dogtown and th Zephyr team, read The True History of Dogtown and the Zephyr Team. The Dogtown and Z-Boys documentary is extremely well made, full of high quality footage from the 1970s, photos, and mixed with fitting music. Sprinkled through the film are interview clips with all the Zephyr team members except Chris Cahill, who has been missing for some time. It's incredible to ... While watching Dogtown and Z-Boys I gained a new appreciation for the Zephyr team. I had always held them in high regard, of course, but to see and hear them talk about how things really were was incredible. To listen to Skip Engblom talk about the team's obsession with style, to hear Jay Adams talk about what he would change if he could go back, or to see Peggy Oki talk about being an aggressive female skater at the Del Mar Nationals - this video will change your perspective! The Dogtown and Z-Boys video documentary ends with some in depth looks at certain Zephyr team members, and where they went - Tony Alva, Stacey Peralta and Jay Adams. These sections were great, and while it would be awesome to see more about the entire 13 person team, there's no way I could have paid attention that long. As it was, the section on Jay Adams felt a little too long already. Jay has been through some hard times, and the video pulls back and slows down a little at this point with a sense of sadness. And at the very end of Dogtown and Z-Boys, text across the screen and video footage tells where all the members of the Zephyr team are today.

Accurate and well crafted
As a skateboarder and surfer from the 70s venice i can tell you this movie is perfect in detailing the time and place.much better than the Hollywood drama version tho both are Stacy's work.buy it!

The Way It Was.
I bought this DVD because I had gone to see the documentary in a theater. I went to the theater because I used to skateboard about 28 years ago when I was a teenager. I believe that was the "second coming" of skateboarding - "now with polyurethane wheels" - and the era that the movie is based upon. Polyurethane was a big improvement over metal wheels (before my time), but you still had to watch out for pebbles if you didn't want to go flying. The movie is fantastic and brought back great memories. Memories of when the cool tricks were tic-tacs and 360's. Although the best I ever did was a 180.
