Charles Band digs up more possessed playthings
More killer toys from the man who brought the world the "Puppet Master" movies, this low budget, direct-to-video one week wonder of a movie has some pretty darn good acting from a young, attractive & quite talented cast, great music, semi-decent special effects (hey, at least you don't see the strings this time!) & cool-looking murderous marionettes. It does have have one noticeable flaw however: Slowest... End... Credits... Ever...! Seriously, the film itself is just over an hour long, but the final credits go on & on for nearly TEN MINUTES! I don't know if producer/director Band was trying to pad out the running time or just wanted to show off the new song featured therein by his rock star son Alex (which, I have to admit, is actually quite good ... More killer toys from the man who brought the world the "Puppet Master" movies, this low budget, direct-to-video one week wonder of a movie has some pretty darn good acting from a young, attractive & quite talented cast, great music, semi-decent special effects (hey, at least you don't see the strings this time!) & cool-looking murderous marionettes. It does have have one noticeable flaw however: Slowest... End... Credits... Ever...! Seriously, the film itself is just over an hour long, but the final credits go on & on for nearly TEN MINUTES! I don't know if producer/director Band was trying to pad out the running time or just wanted to show off the new song featured therein by his rock star son Alex (which, I have to admit, is actually quite good & did keep me listening until the last credit ever so slowly rolled its lethargic way into oblivion...). The spookily surreal opening credits, however, are quite excellent & are well worth checking out just from an artistic point of view. The Victorian-style design of the deadly dolls is also worthy of a look, even if despite their admittedly unique & coolly creepy appearances (pity Full Moon didn't come out with the promised toy line) they somehow seem to lack the personality of previous possessed playthings like Andre Toulon's puppets or the Demonic Toys & Blood Dolls, probably because we never really see them doing anything other than killing people. A word of warning too to the racially sensitive...the doll dubbed "Ooga-Booga" (obviously inspired by the much more madly manic Zuni fetish from the classic 1975 TV movie "Trilogy of Terror") is a racist caricature of a bone-in-his-nose African savage that, while unfortunately accurate to the time period in which he was supposedly made, could be taken as quite offensive to modern sensibilities. "Doll Graveyard" has the usual great extras viewers have come to expect from a Charles Band production, including trailers, a blooper reel & the usual great making-of documentary. The latter is of particular enjoyment for some of the reactions of the younger members of the cast, including the little girl who plays the dolls original owner's delight at being made-up into a rotting-faced zombie & the young actor who plays the teenage toy-collecting protagonist's nonplussed reaction to the porno magazine that is supposedly part of his character's secret stash ("There are girls in it...doing things to each other" & "How can she even stand up with those things?!?") which renews this old curmdugeon's faith in the ongoing innocence of youth in this sexually cynical age. "Doll Graveyard" is not a classic horror film by any means, but I do recommend it for those who want to waste an enjoyable hour or so on some simple B-movie thrills & chills.

It's 1905 when 12 year old Sophia plays all by herself in her big, creepy house with only four handmade dolls as friends. When her abusive father has finally had enough, he forces her to bury them in the backyard. But, after she "slips" and breaks her neck, dad buries her right along with the dolls. 100 years later, the Fillbrook family moves into the very same house. Guy Fillbrook finds the buried dolls while playing in the backyard. Much like Sophia, Guy has no friends and is the constant source of harassment from Tom and Rich. After Sophia's spirit possesses the dolls, they come to life, protecting Guy from further harm. One night, Guy's sister DeeDee, has a party with her best friends Terri and Olivia. Sticking to his classic theme of killer dolls, Charles Band creates another favorite based around the spirit of a young girl and the revenge her dolls seek to protect her from her father. The graphics are pretty realistic for a b-movie and the plot is kind of predictable. I liked it because it was a little scary and somewhat funny at the same time. I had rented it once and saw it a few times, then I saw it here on e-bay and decided to get it so that I can see it whenever I want.
