Great Civil War Adventure - And It's a True Story!
A real gem from 1950s Disney Studio. Fess Parker, fresh off his blockbuster performance as Davy Crockett, stars as James J. Andrews, a union spy leading a group of saboteurs on a mission to wreck the rail lines of the Confederate traitors and insurrectionists. Jeff York, also fresh off his star turn as Mike Fink in the last two Crockett episodes, shines as Bill Campbell, one of Anderson's team who is more prone to fighting than sabotage. The team seizes a train, but is pursued relentlessly by William A. Fuller, the train's conductor. I'll leave the rest to you and not spoil it. Un-enhanced Cinemascope format only.
This was purchased as a replacement for an Anchor Bay release that was wearing out and beginning to skip. Since this was an official Disney release I had hoped for some basic bonus material but there is none. In fact the widescreen format is not even "enhanced" for better detail. Disney movies doesn't seem to believe there are enough of us American history buffs to warrant paying attention to titles like this. Still my thanks to the seller for providing me a good back-up copy of this inspiring look into Civil War history.This was purchased as a replacement for an Anchor Bay release that was wearing out and beginning to skip. Well Worth Watching!
Great Disney movie then, of course, most Disney movies are great. I remember watching it on Sunday night's "Wide World of Disney". I was only 5 when it was in the theaters. Awesome addition to my DVD collection at an affordable price with timely delivery after ordering.

Yankees hijack a confederate train
This is an entertaining civil war tale with fess Parker the hijacker in blue Jeffrey Hunter in grey as a determined train conductor who foils the hijacker’s plans . I only wish Jeffrey Hunter had a much bigger part . A good , engaging movie for everyone .

The Great Locomotive Chase
This is an exciting Walt Disney film from 1956. The Great Locomotive Chase is based on a true incident, that took place during the Civil War. When a small group of Union soldiers, referred to as Andrews' Raiders, board the train as civilian passengers, stealing a Confederate steam train, while its crew, had stopped for breakfast. Fess Parker plays the lead role, as Mr.Andrews,who is a Union spy,who leads his small band south, hoping to cripple the Southern railroad network, to hasten the end of the war. Their efforts are very quickly ended, only due to the courage and loyality of the railroad conductor, whose train was taken, played by Jeffrey Hunter. He immediately begins chasing the stolen train, by foot, then by hand car,then by another locomotive,and finally catching up to ... This is an exciting Walt Disney film from 1956. Unfortunately for Andrews and most of his men, they are executed for their part in the war. A few of the raiders do escape and make it back to their Union lines and receive the Congressional medal of Honor for their efforts. This was a great movie based on a historical incident that occurred in our country. If you are a train fan, you will like this movie.
