Product Information

Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller Peace Like a River captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing," Peace Like a River is "a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane -- from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas" (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In "lyrical, openhearted prose" (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's "miraculous" (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a "perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories" (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press).

Reviews
"Leif Enger ... is a natural-born storyteller, and his novel moves in a current that can be poetic and slow or as tumultuous as whitewater rapids. This novel has the power to convince that, despite sorrow, human experience is a miracle of ordinary truth and extraordinary love." - Atlanta Journal-Constitution "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing ... a journey you simply must not miss." - Christian Science Monitor "What allows Peace Like a River to transcend any limitations of belief and genre is its broad, sagacious humanity ... There is magic here, none more potent than Enger's prose."- Newsday, Praise for New York Times Bestseller "Leif Enger ... is a natural-born storyteller, and his novel moves in a current that can be poetic and slow or as tumultuous as whitewater rapids. There is magic here, none more potent than Enger's prose."- Newsday " Peace Like a River serves as a reminder of why we read fiction to begin with." -- San Francisco Chronicle "If you like a ripping good story told in robust prose that gives you goose bumps, latch onto this book-more than a novel of miracles, it is truly a miraculous novel." -- TheSeattle Times "You don't see novels like this one very often. Peace Like a River reminds a reader of Kent Haruf's Plainsong or even Norman MacLean's A River Runs Through It . It's got that pure American loss of innocence theme, that belief in and fascination with miracles, that insistence on the goodness of men outside of the law." -- Los Angeles Times Book Review "A compelling blend of traditional and artfully offbeat storytelling . . . a miracle well worth witnessing . . . Grade: A."-- Boston Globe "If ever there was a time for a novel of faith and redemption-a quiet book of old-fashioned verities-this is it. -- New York Post

  • Mystery, Metaphor, Miracles...Marvelous

I am an avid reader, always looking for another good book to feed my habit. While often intending to write reviews on them later, this is actually the first time I have ever done so. But then this book deserves review more so than others. It is more than simply a good book. It is excellent. I am amazed at how many of my friends and relatives from all around the country have already read it when I recommend it. Recently friends living in the United Arab Emirates emailed me and mentioned just how much they enjoyed “Peace Like a River”. When querying some Minnesotan friends about this book, I discovered they know Leif Enger & his family personally and had only good things to say about him & his literary ability. Upon reading the book, three “M” words stood out in my mind. Mystery, ...

  • Wonderfully written novel... LOVED IT!

Loved, loved, loved this book. I don't buy books. I check them out from the library. But after one reading, I kept thinking about this book and wanted to own it myself. Leif Enger writes each of his characters with wonderful depth. In the beginning, the story line builds slowly, but holds the reader's attention with both the narrator's, 11-year-old Rueben's, prose of unusual but simple observations of each member of his family as well as the canter of his little sister, Swede's, on-going poem (a story within a story - I enjoyed her writings/story almost as much as the main story). It is a story is a wonderful one about the innocence of childhood and their coming of age. Over the course of The Lands' journey/travels, there are many changes and plenty of miracles. You fall in love with ...

  • Peace like a river reminds me of the hymn, It Is Well With My Soul. This describes Jeremiah’s life well.

I read about this book in a recent Daily Bread devotional and knew I had to read it. A few days later I saw the book at our local library being advertised as the book for the next book discussion next month. Not a coincidence!! I checked the book out, read it, and decided to get my own copy. My mom is now reading it, and I will be rereading it myself. We are both enjoying the story. It is amazing to see all of Jeremiah’s miracles, especially at the beginning of the story with his son. There is humor throughout the story, and many touching moments. I would definitely recommend this book.

  • Coming of Age Story with a Twist

My book club read Peace Like a River for our June 2008 selection. It's a story about the coming of age of a young man in the midwest and his family's search for their outlaw brother with the addition of several miracles performed by the father. Not as satisfying as "Water for Elephants", but an okay selection for book group. We had a good discussion about topics such as justice, faith and miracles. I liked the book and enjoyed reading it, but didn't love it, though several members of my book club loved Peace Like a River.

  • A Great Asset to Literature

From the first few paragraphs the author grabs your attention. It is written from a simple viewpoint, but is so poetic in descriptions and thought. It wouldn't surprised me if this doesn't end up being a book that is studied in English classes someday. A GREAT literary find and addition to American writings. Even my husband is enjoying this book as I read it aloud to him each night -and it's hard to keep his attention very long. I run out of voice before he is ready to quit.
