NOMINATED FOR 11 ACADEMY AWARDS
A timeless story of enduring friendship and the lengths one woman is willing to go for another. These two grow up as close as sisters. Jane Fonda gives a stirring performance as a young, and maybe naive optomist. We are transported to Germany as the Nazis rise to power. Vanessa Redgrave is leading the resistance. Lots of tension. So happy to add this movie to my collection! Joan

Lilian Hellman Tale ~ excellent Trip into Nazi Germany
PLOT: Lilian Hellman (Jane Fonda) story of her friend Julia (Vanessa Redgrave) who was busy doing anti nazi work in pre world War 2 Germany~ Jane Fonda Won an Oscar~ Lilian Helllman wrote this excellent story of her friend Julia~ Julia and Lilian were best friends growing up~ years later~ Julia ends up in PRE World War 2 Germany doing Anti Nazi work~ WE also see Lilian's dark relationship with Dashill Hammitt her lover and friend who encourages her to write~when Julia disppears~ Lilian begins the search to find her~ what adds to the THRILL is Hellman is JEWISH and travels to NAZI Germany and along the way she meets up with Maximilian Schell who has a message from JULIA ~ to help persuade Lilian to carry some "HIDDEN" money to be delivered to Julia to help her ANTI Nazi cause~ Fonda ... Julia is a real winner!
This is my favorite Jane Fonda film even though she won the Academy Award's Best Actress for two others. Jane plays the nervous, insecure Jewish friend (Lillian Hellman) of the rich and bold Christian Julia (Vanessa Redgrave). They have nothing in common except their love of making up stories together and just being together. As an adult Lillian Hellman is a frustrated playwright under the tutelage of Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards), while Julia is off in Vienna studying medicine right at the time of the rise of the Nazis. The movie actually has four plots going on: (1) the friendship between Lillian and Julia as girls and as adults with the accusation that they might be lesbians by one of the other characters, (2) the rise of Lillian as a playwright to Broadway for "The Children's ... This is my favorite Jane Fonda film even though she won the Academy Award's Best Actress for two others. And to boot, we see a gushing Meryl Streep make her film debut as a brunette. Be careful, you won't even notice her. This movie is a winner through and through. It is one of my top movie picks of all time!

...this film inspires Ideals rather than entertains...such a rare quality in films these days...what is Good, True, and Beautiful about friendship in human association is demonstrated as are the antitheses of these Ideals as expressed in the twisted rise of fascism in the 1930's...the title character, 'julia'(vanessa redgrave), serves to show that the Good fight can exact a heavy price from those who would face evil in the world with courage and unyielding faith, determination, and service to what is Good, True, and Beautiful in the human heart and soul - even if it would cost them everything...lillian hellman (jane fonda) is like a child that matures before the eyes of the viewer, discarding her "toys" and frivolous dreams to discover the only thing that matters in this world or the next ... ...this film inspires Ideals rather than entertains...such a rare quality in films these days...what is Good, True, and Beautiful about friendship in human association is demonstrated as are the antitheses of these Ideals as expressed in the twisted rise of fascism in the 1930's...the title character, 'julia'(vanessa redgrave), serves to show that the Good fight can exact a heavy price from those who would face evil in the world with courage and unyielding faith, determination, and service to what is Good, True, and Beautiful in the human heart and soul - even if it would cost them everything...lillian hellman (jane fonda) is like a child that matures before the eyes of the viewer, discarding her "toys" and frivolous dreams to discover the only thing that matters in this world or the next for that matter, Love...for those who seek to do the right thing, to do the best that they can, and to live their lives in Truth and Goodness, this movie is a must to see...it hurts me every time i see it, and i have seen it many times...that is why i know it is Truly a work of art, Beautiful and Good...peace--- mark

A film that stayed in my memory for decades
No a universal appeal, but a deep and moving story with great characters portrayed by good actors. The film is about strong female characters in an extraordinary time. Based on a portion of Lillian Hellman's book: Pentimento. Even if you do not like Hellman herself, there is no doubt that she is one of our finest playwrights/
