  • Wes Craven & Wade Davis

This movie by Wes Craven, is based on a strange book by an ethnobotanist, named Wade Davis. A true story. A search for the poisons used in zombification, to use in Western medicine as anesthetics. Wade Davis enters into the circles of Haitian secret societies never before penetrated by a foreigner. He presents a fascinating account of zombification, saying it requires a sort of faith healing along with the poisons, or drugs, both at the same time to make it work. In 1988 an american horror film, directed by Wes Craven and starring Bill Pullman.loosely based on the book was made and also titled The Serpent and the Rainbow. Some of Wes Craven's best work, it makes it just a little more scarry, knowing it is based on true events. ...

  • Mind-blowing reality converted to entertainment

Wade Davis --- for some reason---is not as well-known as he should be. Wes Craven is more well-known than he should be. Haitian/African spirituality is not well-known at all. A horror director who takes a briliant, and extremely unusual, real-life, bizarre adventure from Wade Davis, Harvard ethnobotanist/anthropologist, into his own genre probably can not do a job strong enough to please those of us who have read Davis original 'The Serpent and the Rainbow.' Reality is more horrifying than Craven't embellishments. But no director could quite capture that -- and it would be a 6 hour film if the effort were to be made. As a horror film, it's pretty good. And what's most good about it are portions which actually represent the reality of Davis's book (and some parts actually do), not ...

  • Black Magic and Good Poison

Wes Craven (The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street) directs this true-to-life tale of a Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) who travels to Haiti in search of a strange powder that brings humans back from the dead. This 1988 underrated exploration of voodoo was part of Craven's uneven late-80s period of mediocrity that stood out from Deadly Friend (1986) and Shocker (1989). The Haitian scenery lends its authenticity to the black magic of the film along with the outstanding if over-the-top visual effects. Overall, the story itself may be part fictious, but it provides geniune thrills and chills from the once great creator of Freddy Kruger.

  • "Good Underrated Horror Flick!"

Bill Pullman and Cathy Tyson star in Wes Craven's 1988 horror film based on true events. An anthropologist learns that voodoo is used in Haiti to bring back the dead. This is creepy and Pullman is great in it as usual. This dvd has decent picture and sound, but only the trailer. I recommend this good underrated horror flick.

  • A Haunting Movie!

I'm not going to dissect the sound editing nor the cinematography of this movie, that's not something I remember vividly. What I do remember is how unbelievably frightening this movie was! Like most of my favorite movies, this is one I've watched more times that I can count. The scariest thing about this movie is that it was based on real events in Haiti regarding Voodoo. The main character Dr. Dennis Alan goes down to find out about cures and new medicines and finds himself in serious trouble. We're talking real zombies here! Not "Day of The Dead" funny zombies, but frightening zombies, hold the special effects. Frightening realism I tell you! This, in my view, is Wes Craven's best movie to date. If you haven't seen "The Serpent And The Rainbow", do it now! Tonight! You won't regret ...
