The PlayStation 2 version of NHL 08 continues EA's sports series with a focus on refining the controls and polishing the on-ice action. The right analog "skill stick" now handles all of the shooting mechanics, from speedy snap shots to powerful slap shots to precise wrist shots. Depending on the shot type, players will flick the analog stick back and forward, rock it toward the goalie, or roll it left or right. Players can still perform a variety of dekes in front of the net, but skaters can also elude defensemen by moving the skill stick left and right. Hard-hitting body checks and quick passes are possible with the skill stick as well, making the controls more streamlined than in previous NHL games on PlayStation 2.<br><br>Another new feature is the ability to guide your favorite AHL team through a complete season to contend for the Calder Cup. AHL players can be called up to the NHL and vice versa, providing would-be GMs more options in roster management. The popular dynasty mode returns to NHL 08 with several additions. There are now weekly goals to complete, for example, offering an opportunity to improve your team up to four times each month. The contract negotiation phase is more transparent with player feedback, giving you a better idea of the type of money an athlete desires instead of having to take guesses and coming up short. The biggest change, however, is the inclusion of a fantasy draft. You now have the power to reshuffle the league and decide which star athletes should become the cornerstones of your dynasty.

Ok. I haven't played EA's NHL series since 2004. I used to be an avid fan, but somewhere along the line, this series just lost its edge. The last hockey game I really liked was NHL 2k5, and that glitched on me too much to play a whole season. With my Penguins doing better than they have in years, I decided to rent this years game. Let me warn you, at first it was rough. I'm not sure when EA switched the shoot button and other functions to the right analog stick, but it made for a learning curve for sure. After an hour of hitting the wrong buttons continuously (there's no way to change the controls to old school), I finally got the hang of using the right stick and not having a heavy check button (I was horrified at first). What I found was a very well-balanced hockey game, with the right ... Ok. I haven't played EA's NHL series since 2004. The heavy hits come somewhat randomly, but also very naturally, and the follow the flow of the game as opposed to EA's old school hit-fests which, while fun, were never very representative of the actual game. The fight controls are pretty good and the Dynasty mode is not too bad either, although I wish EA would put some of the extra attention and features in that they do for Franchise mode in their Madden series. All in all, if you're a hockey fan or even just a hockey game fan, EA has a damn good game out this year, provided you're not too old school to learn a new control scheme. I definitely enjoy playing it.

For the money $$$, NHL 2K8 is the best looking hockey game his year hands down. The ice is slick and gets torn up as skaters race across it, the screen pops with color and action, and the players are always moving and hungry for the puck. Here is the Question NHL 08 or 2K8? I Have played both and NHL 2K8 Beats out The EA Sports NHL 08..This games has better graphics on the Xbox 360 or PS3 consoles. I'm here to tell you about 2K's impressive and intensive take on the NHL. Like I said before, I realize you're a hockey fan, but I can't assume you know about 2K's history on the ice. Year in and year out, this franchise has made its name by being the top hockey sim around, and fans who have turned to this series for the feel of a real game aren't about to be disappointed -- but they are going ... Hockey games have been integrating the right thumbstick for sometime -- whether it is for dekes or shot modifiers -- but 2K8's default Pro Stick control scheme means your success hinges on mastering the idea of rocking two thumbsticks -- yes, very similar to last year's EA outing -- and the bumpers as your primary method of control. I used to buy the Ea Sports Nhl games but fall in love with the nhl 2k6 and have been buying it for the past 3 years...also did i tell you that it is cheaper in price! I love the Ads on the boards it makes it look like a Real Rink. Harry Nealy and Bob Cole do the PLAY BY PLAY The only thing that bugs me about the game is that the goalies don't have there orginal masks, Ea Sports has the Rights to that! BUY NHL 2K8 AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED, THANKS 8.0 Presentation The tree-diagram interface is lame and doesn't fit the fun, fluid style of the game. 7.5 Graphics The players fly around (and reflect in) the ice, the replays are detailed and the cuts to the bench look great. Too bad the crowd looks blah. 8.0 Sound The player sounds, arena rock anthems and general hockey ambience sounds excellent, but the commentary is stiff and the Cinemotion feels phoned in. 8.5 Gameplay The Pro Stick is going to challenge you -- in the best way -- for every score and lead to a real sense of accomplishment and mastery. The computer can be cheap and seems to get all the breaks. 9.0 Lasting Appeal Contract negotiations, free agency, online leagues, player growth and more ensure that if building a dynasty is your thing, this is well worth the price of admission. 8.0 Great OVERALL (out of 10 / not an average)

We all know that sports games are all about control, and NHL '08 has some of the best available. With the left analog stick, you can slow down and speed up your player for maximum control. Also, stick controls are tightened up at close range, so no more randomly deciding who wins face-offs. Also added is a great General Manager mode, for those who wish to run their own hockey team some day. Haha. With amazing graphics and lots of new features, hockey fans definitely need to pick this one up. NHL 08 is a Good game for the ps2
I notice a difference in the graphics compared to the NHL 04 I had. The controls were a little different, however it did have the option to use the classic button configuration. Players moved smoother and game-play is more realistic than previous years. I cannot say that there is anything I don't like about it yet, but I'm sure if there is, I will write another review. I bought the game to replace the 04 addition I had, it needed to retire. Excellent game, great graphics. Enjoy playing this game!!! excellent features!!! I've had other EA NHL games in the past. Wanted to get the newer version and EA is always the way to go on sports games. Enjoy the fact that you can play the AHL teams as well.
