Product Information

The winning 10th feature from John Waters straddles a fine line between the eager vulgarity of his earlier works and the sloppy sweetness of HAIRSPRAY and CRY-BABY. Set, as usual, in Baltimore, the film stars Edward Furlong as Pecker, a sweet-natured young fellow who happily passes the days photographing his surroundings with a cheap secondhand camera. Egging him on are his Virgin Mary-obsessed grandmother (Jean Schertler), his sugar-addicted younger sister (Lauren Hulsey), his kleptomaniac best friend (Brendan Sexton III), and his girlfriend (Christina Ricci), who runs a Laundromat with an iron fist. When Pecker's works are "discovered" by a slumming NYC art dealer (Lili Taylor), his simple life is turned upside down, and he quickly realizes that he was happier as an unknown. A valentine to--and satire of--the art world, PECKER makes strangely poignant statements about the nature of art and the value of fame. As someone with a foot in both the New York art scene and the earthiness of Baltimore, the title character obviously has more than a touch of the director in him. As with all other Waters films, those who are familiar with Baltimore culture will be even more richly rewarded.

Cheap and Dirty, yet Surprisingly Heartwarming
While Pecker, once aptly described by a Japanese publication as 'a Disney film for perverts' is worlds away from the early exploitation films of its notorious creator, Baltimore director John Waters, it does offer a near return to the low budget charm of those films. Unlike its three immediate predecessors, Hairspray, Crybaby and Serial Mom, all of which boasted Hollywood budgets and used more conventional actors and production methods, Pecker was filmed by John Waters himself and one finds his cinematic style streamlined but still identifiable. Though it features Hollywood names in Christina Ricci and Edward Furlong, as well indie darlings such as Lili Taylor and a number of well known character actors, several of Waters' Dreamlanders make appearances, notably Mary Vivian Pierce as a ... Several notable artists also make appearances, including shape shifting photographer Cindy Sherman, surprisingly among the most subdued cameos in the film. Though by no means his masterpiece, Waters offers an offbeat, charming and surprisingly heartwarming film which still offers its share of grotesque moments and scandalous peaks into the apparently thriving underbelly of his beloved Baltimore.

My fascination with Patricia Hearst drew me to this movie. At first I wasnt sure If I was going to like it, with its "perverted" type of humor, but once I digested it, I began to appreciate its TRUTH in the story. Patricia Hearst is awesome because she can mock and laugh at herself, and I know it takes a certain sophistication an intelligence to do that! This film is a definate keeper. John Waters isnt afraid to step out of the social boundries which is exactly what makes this Country outstanding. Bill CurtoMy fascination with Patricia Hearst drew me to this movie.
