good upscaling player for the money
The Philips DVP 5990 is small and sleek, doesn't take up much room, pleasing to the eye. Picture from standard def 480 to hi def 1080 is very good. Like all Philips machines, disks are a bit slow loading, and it's fast forward and rewind functions could be a bit better. This machine will play DivX movie discs and includes a USB port for viewing .avi files, a nice feature. The remote is also slim and sleek, responds well to commands however the buttons are a bit on the flimsy side. There are features I haven't tried as of yet, such as being able to create MP3's I guess from music CDs. The back of the unit contains the standard Video, Component and HDMI outputs. Good buy for the money
Overall this unit is good value and what I like most about it is the HDTV availibility. I can't give 5-star rating for one reason. It does not response quickly on command and it takes longer time to change different actions from remote control. I bought this model with region free capability which means that I could watch any kind of dvds available out there in the world. It also works great with vcds from different countries. The other feature that I like best is it's small size and light weight but it delivers a big performance. Set-up is very quick and simple. Connection is a snap and start-up is a breeze.Overall this unit is good value and what I like most about it is the HDTV availibility. I can't give 5-star rating for one reason. I am not satified w/prdct, it does't resolved my DL media play back issues
Before I purchase this model i carefully reasearch a dvd player that will play back all recored media,I have add a 3rd player that do not play DVD DL+/- and some time wont play the DvD 4.7, after reading reviews, my conclusion is that maybe some of the views are tainted. I searching for a DVD player that will play all type of media, especially (Double Layer ,8.5 Gb)DL+/)). All my DVD-DL recored come back with a Disk is Dirty message on the screen. I clean the lazor eye /no print or smugges on the recorded DL. If I compress the same movie on 4.7 DVD +/-, it plays just fine, even with smugges. The reviews had me convince the Phillip DVP5990 will play ever media type there is, Some player will specify types, but what I found if it not written in the specs, it probably may or will not" play ... It also works with analog TVs exceptionally well. It seems to handle both DVD+R and DVD-R recordings, and I've played as many as 6 full-length 2-hr. films or 100 DivX camera recordings per DVD without a hitch. It has excellent controls and the flexibility to zoom, pan and scan, and do progressive scanning. For less than $50, you're getting a device which blows away Blu-ray in ... I have to say right off I love this player. Not only does it play DVD's and play them well. It also will play pretty much anything you can throw at it. AVI's, DIVX PC encoded files, photos and more. For those who like to download videos from the internet, you can burn the AVI files directly to a CD, DVD or DVD R/W without the hassle and time consuming ordeal of converting each file to DVD format. The player also has the feature of Lip-sync. This allows you to correct for audio that is off or not quite sync'd while watching an AVI or other type file. This is a most awesome feature. On top of all that, it also has a USB port which would allow you to watch an AVI file or view photos directly off a USB device such as a thumb drive. This will save you even more by not having to burn the movie ... I have to say right off I love this player. Not only does it play DVD's and play them well. It also will play pretty much anything you can throw at it. AVI's, DIVX PC encoded files, photos and more. Also, the player will either be able to play any region DVD out of the box or by doing a simple procedure outlined below, You can play any region DVD. So it is a region free DVD player. As if this isn't enough for a player in the $29.95 - $40.00 range, you can also connect it via the HDMI connection where it does an excellent job of up converting most all playable media to 1080i High Def. Some AVI files will not play if connected through high def and therefore you may need to connect the RCA cables. And lastly, this player can play off DVD R plus or minus, DVD R/W and DVD DL. That's right. I had no problem playing a full DVD movie off a DVD DL (dual layer) disc. Now I know what your saying. "It can't be all good right"? This is true, with all this good there has to be some bad. I will list what I don't like about the player and you decide how bad it actually is. 1. You cannot connect both HDMI and RCA at the same time. 2. Through HDMI (only), you will not get a picture until it actually reads a disc. This sucks because if you have a DVD disc with 3 or 4 AVI files on it, you will not be able to see the files list or even the DVD player screen unless you blindly hit play, then stop. By hitting play you will start viewing the first movie, then stop to see the list. RCA connection does not do this. 3. There is no Digital optical port, only digital coaxial. 4. The remote only controls the DVD player, not a TV or any other device unless that other device is a Philips TV. These negatives are all based on the one I bought off Ebay which was a refurb. I am buying another one new and will update or redo this review if any of this changes. That's about it. I actually have an older model of this player as well which does all the same things and works as well but takes forever from the time you turn it on to the time you can open the tray. This is really annoying. The 5990 seems to have corrected this and you can open the tray after only a few seconds. In my opinion, you can't do any better for the money then the Philips 5990 DVD/Media player! ***** Region free procedure: With no disc in the drive and the drive closed, press "Setup", select the "Preferences" tab, press 1,3,8,9,3,1 in that sequence, you should now see a screen that says "Region Code "1" (or whatever #). Use the "Up" or "Down" key to select "0", press "OK" to exit. If you don't or can't get the "Preferences" tab, start the procedure by pressing "Stop" twice, then follow the above. To check the firmware version, goto the "General" tab, press "1,3,7,9". You will see your firmware at the top and current region setting at the bottom.
