Amazing, melodic songwiting...
Gerry Rafferty is probably one of the finest 'traditional' songwriters I have ever heard. His lack of great fame stems from his refusal to tour at the appropriate times, and the fact that when he did agree to hit the road, he refused to cross the Atlantic and tour America. Nevertheless, with five million 'plays' to it's credit, 'Baker Street' from the album 'City to City', remains one of the most recognizable tunes ever recorded, and is a testament not only to his songwriting ability, but also to his production skill as he co-produced both these fantastic albums. Oddly enough, it seems to me that among my friends, 'Right Down the Line' from the same album is more popular and loved even more. With his smooth over the top vocals ... With his smooth over the top vocals and complete awareness of melody, harmony, rhythmic and instrumentational structure, it would be hard for anyone to find a 'bad' song on either of these recordings. The man was a perfectionist and that's exactly what you receive here...perfection. I would HIGHLY recommend this two disc set to anyone who loves music and great songwriters in general (ie J. Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young), but be aware, Gerry was a simple man, and loved to live his life in that fashion. You won't find any super, mind twisting poems or things like that, just straight forward, everyday, situational tunesmithing, polished to perfection with a nice rock groove. As far as style goes, it would be difficult to lump his style in with anyone. His chordal stuctures tend to be on the major side, yet in almost every song, he'll throw an absolutely brilliant and melodic curveball at you. One thing is certain, he wasn't afraid to explore the fret or keyboard. He was an adventurer with a keen sense of direction. He knew exactly how to get back to the well worn, beaten path. I do believe if I was pressed, I might actually say that if Paul McCartney and David Gilmore hooked up with the Eagles, the resulting band would probably sound like Gerry Rafferty. That's pretty bold, but fairly accurate. You get the McCartney vocals- all but smoother- with a touch of Gilmore thrown in, over some fairly hot guitar solos all being pushed by an Eagle-like rhythm section. Plus the songwriting...it's just great, unique stuff. A definite 'BUY'. Two thumbs up...

Hard to find titles
Gerry Rafferty was a great musician that had a bad experience with Hollywood. It seems that you can't really get any US pressed CD's of his music other than the first City to City album. This set is from Europe and has the first & second albums. The quality is first rate and the music is as good as you remember it being.
