Listen Without Prejudice...
What more can I say about this breathtakingly innovative three piece? Only that if all you're interested in is pretty tunes, polite dinner party music or predictable 'hits', then swerve this heavyweight oevre of outstanding compositions to your detriment. 'Nothing' builds on the creativity of 'In Search Of','Fly or Die'and 'Seeing Sounds' and takes it to another level, challenging the listener yet again to try and predict what they're gonna do next and when they don't get exactly what they expect, to stick the CD on loop until it gets so far under their skin that they really begin to appreciate what is is to boil a collection of songs down to its bare, harmonous bones. The stand out tracks for me are Life as a Fish, a dreamy Barrie-style plea for the the health of the envionment; ... What more can I say about this breathtakingly innovative three piece? The stand out tracks for me are Life as a Fish, a dreamy Barrie-style plea for the the health of the envionment; Hypnotize U, which does exactly that; Victory, which showcases Pharell's multi-layered vocal range to the full; and I Wanna Jam, a psychadellic-futuristic hybrid of a dance track that is typical of the kind of curve ball N*E*R*D enjoy tossing. But in all honesty, there's not on duff or unnecessary track to be seen. Prior to buying the deluxe edition, I'd purchased the standard CD, which, in my opinion, was frustratingly short. Possibly a misguided marketing strategy. Trying to cash in on the 'bonus track culture' is really for those artists who run out of steam and decided on a little extra padding. Not so these extra tracks (It's in the Air, Sacred Temple, I Wanna Jam and The Man), all superb and therein lies the mistake. Even so, it was an absolute pleasure to part with the extra cash for the extended version. The best thing I can say about N*E*R*D is that they constantly challenge and endeavour to push the boundaries of music in an age of blandness and pretenders. No doubt, this effort won't be commercial enough for the 'supermarket' buyers of music, but this is why I love what they do so much...because as The Neptunes their music dominates the charts (at one time it was reckoned that a third of the tunes in the top 20 were produced by Messrs Williams & Hugo) so they blatantly have the formula to churn out commerial hits. But as N*E*R*D, they deliberately choose the road less travelled and I for one am eternally grateful!

so like all artists, albums tend to go through various phases. 'in search of' had that hip-hop/rnb feel, they followed up with the brilliant 'fly or die' which had a bit more of a 'pop/rock/rnb' feel and then came 'seeing sounds' - i must admit when i first heard it i disliked it but the more you listened to it the more you appreciated it (many people probably never got to that stage though). think youd probably describe it as a bit more "experimental" so it should come as a relief to hear that 'nothing' is nothing like 'seeing sounds' and is most similar to 'fly or die'. 'hot n fun' being the headline song with that characteristic simple catchy beat but that aside there are some other great songs - 'perfect defect' being a particular highlight for me alongside 'life as a fish' and come ... so like all artists, albums tend to go through various phases.
