Product Information

Double Gold Medal Winner: The Benjamin Franklin Awards for Best Biography and Best Cover The World War II US Marine-turned-painter who helped popularize South Pacific and Tiki art and later the plight of endangered species Raised in Central California, American artist Ralph Burke Tyree was the most prolific portrait artist of the South Pacific peoples of the twentieth century. After studying art at the California College of the Arts (Oakland), Tyree joined the Marines seven weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He soon shipped off to Samoa. There, Private Tyree was befriended by his Commanding General and became the Marine base's artist. His portrait career began with painting the officers and their loved ones. He began his post-military career by returning to the South Pacific to live in places such as Guam, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii. He also traveled Palau, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands over his thirty-year career. Most of his early works were sensual island wahines in island beach and jungle settings. He painted primarily with oil on board but also occasionally on canvas and with pastels. To add depth and texture to his work, mid-career Tyree switched to painting with oil on fine French silk and black velvet. This was in the midst of the 1960's Tiki revolution; many of his nude pieces were displayed in Tiki bars and restaurants. Tyree was likely the most prolific South Pacific and Tiki artist of the twentieth century. In the 1970s, Tyree began painting endangered species to call attention to their limited numbers. He died of a heart attack at age fifty-seven in 1979. Tyree was a dreamer who painted idealized women in idyllic South Pacific landscapes, the faces of wizened island men, and endangered species. His portraiture, whether of humans or animals, captured their quiet, gentle spirit.

  • Excellent bio - Beautiful paintings

Very complete telling of the artist's life story. Beautifully illustrated with large scale, high quality photos of his work. A first class production all around. Like the author, I had come across one of Burke's paintings and was curious to know more. Info on the web was almost non-existent, but luckily a search on eBay turned up this gem. Includes a little history on other velvet painters for context. Enriched by the stories and mementos shared by the artist's wife and children, it is a much needed monograph on this highly talented velvet painter.

  • There will need to be a "Tyree 2"...

Lovely, informative book but as a person who owns Tryee works and has sold several more...this book missed some of the great ones. Even a cursory internet search of auction houses like "liveauctioneers" will give you a look at many of his works that changed hands over the years. Nevertheless, a solid showing that will hopefully have a follow-up by this well-researched author.

  • Tyree's life and art in detail!

I just finished this excellent accounting of Ralph Burke Tyree the amazing painter whose work was really brought to life with the medium of oils and black velvet. His personal story is as compelling as his mesmerizing "Dusky Maidens" surrounded by the natural flora of the south seas. Tyree is portrayed as the multidimensional artist evident through his subjects human and animal also evident is the depth of his passion and attention to detail that make his subjects live on the velvet. I came across his work and subsequently couldn't find any real info on the man and his work so the author's fine effort is a real treasure for me, so much good content and again, a beautiful book!

  • This book will take you to paradise!

A wonderful book, lovingly researched and richly illustrated biography of a now almost iconic artist associated with mid 20th century Polynesian Pop and Tiki Style. Returning GI's from WWII's pacific theater fueled a demand for south seas imagery and Tyree's contribution of elegant seascapes, vegetation and dusky island maidens was significant. The author weaves a portrait of a man with three enduring loves: his wife and family, his work and the mid & south pacific seas. You will love it!

  • Beautiful Imagery & A Compelling Bio - Ralph Burke Tyree

Tyree: Artist of the South Pacific by C.J. Cook - This book is a crowd pleaser. Beautifully written and stunning imagery. A fusion of great story telling of Ralph Burke Tyree's life and remarkable South Pacific inspired artwork. Great for both an avid reader and as a conversation starter coffee table book. A great buy in which I highly recommend.
