Winner of nine David di Donatello Awards among numerous other international prizes, BREAD AND TULIPS is a charming romantic comedy from director Silvio Soldini. Licia Maglietta is simply magnificent as Rosalba, a fortyish married woman who is abandoned at a rest stop during a family bus trip. Suddenly feeling that something is missing from her life, she hitches her way toward Venice, calling her husband--bathroom fixture salesman, Mimmo--only occasionally to tell him that she is taking her own short vacation and that he will have to take care of the house and their two teenage sons. But a day or so stretches into a longer period of time as Rosalba finds herself making a new group of friends, getting a job, and beginning to care for an oddly appealing--and suicidal--waiter. The great Bruno Ganz is terrific as the fatalistic Icelandic waiter who speaks softly and carefully, stringing together multisyllabic, unusual words that often leave other characters scratching their heads while the audience laughs. The film features an outstanding supporting cast, including Felice Andreasi as an aging anarchist florist who likes to yell at customers, Giuseppe Battiston as a detective-story-reading plumber, Marina Massironi as a flippy holistic beautician masseuse, and Daniela Piperno as a wacky free spirit who changes Rosalba's life.

A bit slow paced and jumps without warning.
Above average, not great, it is a story of a woman who accidentally comes face to face with how dissatisfied she is with her own life by being left behind on a vacation trip. Instead of staying put "and being a good girl" she decides to hitch a ride home-- but instead winds up in Venice, misses her train home, winds up staying there, and things get more and more complicated bit by bit. There are times that the story just jumps to conclusions and behaviors, but overall it does a fairly good job of staying on track-- if you can tell dreams from reality, and then enjoy the case of reality being mistaken for a dream. Bread and Tulips is a look at the life of a middle aged married woman who has been taken for granted by her family to whom she has always been very devoted. Fate puts her in an unusual set of circumstances and she explores alternatives and develops friendships with people who appreciate her. The mood ranges from somewhat serious to extraordinarily funny. It is handled in such a way that it avoids being maudlin while still giving the viewer a look into the woman's emotionality and strength. Overall, it's a great bit of entertainment.Bread and Tulips is a look at the life of a middle aged married woman who has been taken for granted by her family to whom she has always been very devoted. Surprisingly good!
An Italian Wife and mother is left behind at a bus stop forgotten by her family as she is trying to retrieve her weeding band that fell in the toilet. After that as she waits for pick up she decides to go on a vacation by herself to Venice and there she finds herself again, meets friends and love.

When you want to watch warm happy ending...
Bruno Ganz is great in this Italian movie. Funny, entertaining, engaging and moving as well. Highly recommended.
